New Feature Suggestion: The Vault
Keeping items organized has always been a chore in this game. Nothing sours the feeling of accomplishment from finishing a mission with the dread that you then have to spend time sorting the loot into designated containers.

I suggest there be a new craftable structure called The Vault. It will be huge. It will cost monstrous amounts of resources. Why build it? Vaults will have infinite storage and the sorting interface that trader inventories have. Just dump your loot and get back out there, survivor!

Thoughts?

I'm for it. Maybe even give them a sort of ender's chest attribute with shared inventory. I imagine when they put in raiders that they'll be quite the attraction, would need passive security while away.

yeah on another game i used to play, Ark survival, Vaults were useful for all sorts of things. largest storage capacity, high durability made them excellent for valuables in PvP, and were balanced by the cost to make and weight of the item in the inventory (which i guess in 7D, would be a huge limit on item stack size.)

i think one could work. something in the 2x3x2 size would make it an excellent repository. as for infinite storage slots... i think that'd be a bad idea, but it could definently have like 10x the capacity of the current maximum slot count to start and see how that functions.

id love to see more storage options but not infinite, item management is part of the game i think. What i'd really like to see is system like in "long dark" where you can place items outside of any containers and it never disappears and also has visual impact on your surroundings, like for example you can stack food cans on a table and some gear

Hmm. While it’s a ‘want, not need’ kind of thing, it would be nice for the sake of modding to have an inventory interface that supports scrolling and/or multiple pages.

Cool idea. For game balance reasons I don't think vaults should have infinite storage. Also, I think if you do build one you are immediately open to being raided by bandits. Furthermore, I think you should be able to rent secure storage from a trader.

Some places like Bob (Set up in a Storage Lot) seem like they would be ideal for renting rooms for the night.

Is the intent for the Trader Enclaves to have more NPCs at some point? Be Hubs of Survivors?

Why add something like that?

You can already actually BUILD the Vault of your dreams with the current build system.

You just need to build a steel blocks room with a steel vault door, then you can put inside all the safes and/or named containers that you like, divided by category or whatever criteria you choose.

That's the beauty of sandbox games, you can already build or do whatever you like with the tools you're given by the devs. :yay:

The point of adding this is to gain the benefit of auto sorting the items stored in your base. You spend a lot of time sorting through loot from the wasteland. This structure is meant to have an upgrade path to better quality of life in late game.

Ok, but that would be just a really small QoL improvement IMO, since most of the sorting can already be done by distributing stuff over several containers.

Most of the sorting you do is to find some specific thing that you already know of anyway. So, if it's a material you just go to the materials containers, while if it's some crafting stuff you may have already sorted that out in different containers with whatever you think they should be grouped with.

I see where you are going with this, and tend to agree. But, I also see what the OP's suggestion is aiming at. So, playing Devil's advocate here...

Splitting up over different containers is a very manual operation, and requires that all players adhere to the same splitting behaviors. And there are occasions when you just don't have the time or energy to micromanage your loot across multiple boxes. For example, after (or even during) something like a horde night where you might be running around grabbing loot bags, running back to dump into a box, then back out again before the bags despawn. You don't have time to carefully place into each correct box, which means you dump into a box, then have to grab that stuff later and distribute it across the relevant storage locations. This can be tedious, and potentially worse in mutiplayer scenarios. New players are usually at a disadvantage with regimented storage configurations, unless you have some serious signage and/or run new players through a complete base storage orientation.

One big vault that you can just dump things into, and click the "sort" button could provide a lot more QoL than you might imagine. Everybody plays differently, this could be worth it to many players out there. Don't know that I'd use it, but that doesn't mean there isn't a place for it in the game (or at least maybe a great mod for it).

I only play SP so I can see how that would be a more useful feature for MP players.

That being said I don't think TFP have time to add such a feature to the game, so I only eventually see something like this coming as a mod.

I play SP, and that's far more than a small improvement, especially if there's a button for dropping off everything at one. Add an ability for players to lock inventory slots, and it's perfect. It would save a ton of time if players could drop everything off at once and have it automatically consolidated and clearly categorized. Plus, the traders have a search bar, making it easy to find what you want. I don't understand how someone can unironically call this a "small" QoL change. That's like saying owning an indestructible robotic slave is a small QoL change.

100% agree this should be in the game. The sheer amount of time lost going though every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ box and make sure it is all sorted correctly is massive. I think JOST fails to grasp just how much of a time sink it is after EVERY raid or horde night, SP or MP, to split the loot up into the correct boxes while also managing all the other base related chores. As a builder I'd love to get some of that time back to actually play the game over being the inventory manager for me and the wife's base.

(this is a jesting post so don't take it seriously)

We don't need a vault. We need pipes! Connect all the chests together with pipes. Stick filters on the pipes to channel junk into the proper containers. Imagine the mass exodus of Minecraft players when they realize the game has the perks of Mekanism or EnderIO without creepers!
