[VIVE] Menu button does not launch in VR menu.
I've seen this SO many time, but I need better instructions than people are saying... because none of the fixes work for me.
  1. Headset, controllers, lighthouses work fine. Everything is copacetic.
  2. Using the menu button in VR does not pop the menu.

Solutions that have worked for others:
  • After SteamVR is up, Launch VRDashboard and it should restore the menu button.
  • If that doesn't work, run VRDashboard as Admin.

I've tried this. When opening up Task Manager, I see that VRDashboard is running. (As well as a bunch of other VIVE items.) I End Task on VRDashboard and it automatically relaunches. Running it in Admin mode just creates another instance seems to be disconnected and ignored. Closing SteamVR and launching VRDashboard first didn't work either.

I think this is an old solution, but it's the only one that seemed to make sense.

  • Uninstall SteamVR.
  • Reinstall SteamVR.
  • Again, if that doesn't work, run VRDashboard (as Admin).

Nope. That didn't work either. (Also, I had to turn down all services associated with VR, reboot the machine, and gut all VIVE working tools in the background in order to properly uninstall.

  • Uninstall EVERYTHING: HTC Vive, Steam, and all that.
  • Reinstall.
  • It should work.

This is a lot of effort for where I'm at. I know I don't need to uninstall my games, but... is there a better/easier way to do a full CLEAR/CLEAN of VIVE software and get everything laid down properly? I'd love a Dev answer... if that's a possibility.

Thanks.

Did you ever find a solution to this? This just started happening to me tonight after I installed the SteamVR beta. Tried rolling back to the main branch and not working, tried uninstalling SteamVR and... it's still there? Can you not uninstall by right clicking and selecting uninstall? I also don't see it in Windows uninstall dialog.

So, yeah, I think I figured this out. Inside of SteamVR Settings, under Applications, there is a "Dashboard Applications" selection that allows you to select VIVE Dashboard and Steam.exe, but it never would stick. I thought that was my problem for a while... I also could see that it said "Dashboard Off" on the lower right of the SteamVR, which was also confusing.

But then I found the solution! I went to the Developer settings and found that Enable VR Dashboard was deselected as on of the first checkboxes. I checked it and relaunched and I could hit my menu button and launch the Dashboard within the headset.

Boy that was a headache to figure out. There are way too many options saying opposite things in the SteamVR Beta.

One of the recurring fixes I've heard are finding the vrdashboard.exe, right click, and run as Administrator while running SteamVR. I did that a ton, but I apparently didn't have the other pieces in place before this happened. Try that and see if that works?

Thanks for the tips everyone, enabling VR Dashboard in developer settings worked for me.

Are you still currently having this issue? I know that I recently had the issue arise because of a Windows Defender option that I turned on, and then subsequently changed the Steam dashboard exe to run as admin, so even after I disabled 'Controlled Folder Access' from Windows defender it still wouldn't load.

Removed the option to Run the EXE as admin and tested again and it seems to work, let me know if you're still having the issue.

When that happen to me I found that a beam of blue light was coming from one of my trackers, i.e. steam was considering my tracker to be controller. I pressed and hold the tracker button and that somehow reset them right
