SteamVR
Compositor not in Full Screen issues
My vive works great with most games, but with specific title freaks out and gives me:

"Compositor not in full screen" error, SteamVR goes to a 'not ready' status, and my vive has solid red screens. This happens every time I load Space Pirate Trainer, and occasionally with TheBlu.

I've restarted into 'direct mode', unpluged everything, restarted, yadda yadda. But no matter what I do, with SPT, this error pops up. I've tried all the suggestions I found on the Vive Reddit help page concerning this issue, but nothing helps (the idea from that page is that my computer is lying and not realy restarting in direct mode?).

Anyone else have this happen to specifc titles? Any work around?

PS: My rig meets and exceeds recommendations and has a Titan NVidia card.

I googled "vive red screen" and got this. It relates to an older version of SteamVR and Vive but the fix may still work:

"the red screen is a warning that you have overlapping windows with the vive window which causes the vive to refresh at the rate of the monitor [...] To fix this I open SteamVR before hand (that little dialog box that shows whether the controllers and base stations are connected) this will pop up with a little box above it whenever the screen is red asking if you want to make the compositor full screen, click that and it'll fix the issue"

You can probably do this without taking off the headset if you press the system button on your Vive controller and switch to the desktop view.

Please reply if this fixes your issue, it would be good for other people to be able to find this.

The dialog box pops up with the link, but when you click on it, it does nothing. The only other 'window' i have open is steam. It's like they adressed this issue, but the link it's giving me is broken.
Please contact Steam Support and include a SteamVR system report. Thanks! https://support.steampowered.com/newticket.php?appid=7&category=408/

After 3 days of trying, that link started working. Weird. Maybe it was covered in the update? If it happens again i'll sent a report.
I have this problem now. I haven't used the Vive in a while prior to yesterday due to my base stations consistently dropping out.

Yesterday software automatically updated when starting... ...but I have also upgraded to Win 10 since last using the Vive.

I also tried clicking on the link provided asking if I wanted to go to fullscreen but nothing happened.
Still getting this message on most games now.

I love having an expensive paperweight.

Ya know what? This isn't so easy. I can't even get an option for SteamVR to pick as something I'm having a problem with under the headline VR.

Steam Support is downright crap...
Haven't been able to solve this--vive headset solid red screens, "compositor not fullscreen" link either does nothing, or brings me to the option to enable direct mode in vive settings, but clicking to enable it only restarts steamvr, and then same cycle starts again. Is there another way to get to direct mode? Thank you!
You can get direct mode from here. Under settings and then developer.

Thanks for replying--i do that, I click on enable direct mode, it then says "has to restart steamvr in order to enable direct mode" but when it restarts the same "extended mode" message appears. No matter how many times I click to enable it, it doesn't stick...

Make sure the hdmi or display port the headset is plugged into is wired directly to the nvidia or amd video adapter. If you are running on a laptop, these are often wired to the motherboard (for integrated graphics - e.g. Intel adapter). Intel does not have direct mode support, so these setups only work via Optimus (which also introduces latency) and is not recommended.
Aaron--thank you for your reply--can you tell me as a novice what my options are if there's only one hdmi port, and if as you said, it's not going to the right place? I should note though, that the vive and games were working fine for many weeks...thank you!

I'm following all of the directions... It works until I open up a game. And when I take off the headset, the game is full screen on my computer. This just started happening after an update to my vive headset. I am also unable to find "HTC VIVE" in the support section... :steamfacepalm:
