Valve Index IPD too low!!!
Why you do this to me Valve?! My IPD is 74.1, but the Index only goes up to 70mm! Why you do this?! What do you have against big people?

70 t0 74.1? That's a lot.

I have a measured IPD of 74 mm (only 5ft 9). I have been using the rift at a setting of 70 without too much in the way of issues, have tried the rift down at 68 and not too bad. Have also tried manually pushing the rift lenses out to 72mm and have not seen that much difference; although havnt tried it for extended periods.
Hopefully they will introduce a software IPD tweak as well although I don't expect that to change 0the eye strain issue. Maybe the eye relief changes will have some influence, if pushed out to maximum from the eye, would that reduce the crossing of the eyes, even if it reduces the fov.
Will have to wait for my order until I see some real life reviews in a month or two from people with high IPD.
Flight sims are my main use but that may change when / if half life comes out

I had to find out from my own experience that people with an IPD below 64 mm cannot fully enjoy the large FOV of the Index because the nasal bone prevents this. I have an IPD of 61,3 mm and when I push the relief as close as possible to my face and then try to set the correct IPD I feel the lenses touching my nose and the relief snaps back to 64 mm after releasing the knob.
So the FOV depends on the IPD as well as on the procurement of the nasal bone.

If they made the headset more tailored to taller people with bigger heads what happens to all those smaller people they also want to support? do they now have to wear something way too bulky for them to ever find comfortable? it would make more sense to just release different size models.

Valve, this is one of the first available mods for the Index to bump the IPD to 72. A cardboard spacer works for me to push the lens further apart. Stick your fingers in there and push them out a little and you'll see the extra movement. Cut some cardboard along the tube for strength to push those lenses apart and perfect! I was going cross-eyed or something before, but this helps so much! Took video of super fast solution, but don't do this usually video stuff, please bear with me, but I think you get it.

Video on the Facebook page for cardboard piece, supper easy, just do it! Sorry to drag you there, but until I post to YouTube, that's all I got. Gonna call this the - Cardboard Fix for Index IPD 72 - spread the word, this really works! Poked the internet for a mod, but nothing. Waiting to hear from 3d printers for exact spec to space these lenses.

72.5mm IPD with the headset at its max 70mm is only 1.25 millimeter off in each direction. That's probably within the design tolerance to account for people not knowing their exact IPD.

depends. How big is the index sweet spot in mm?

Nice question ^^ All I can say is that the sweet spot is small

Got my index today. I have an ipd of 73.4mm and this headset just doesn't work for me. The max ipd of the headset is indeed 70mm. Yes you can put cardbord in between the lenses and get a millimeter or so more but it is just not enough. Even if you do that you will still be cross eyed due to the nature of the headset. I will probably make my own mod to the ipd rail of my headset later to get my ipd out of it.

BTW you can offset the IPD beyond the HMD's range in SteamVR. My IPD is 73.4mm so i have to offset it by 3.4mm. This obviously won't help with any blurring caused by the lenses themselves but will help get you a more correct stereo image. To add an offset open up your Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\steamvr.vrsettings config file and add "ipdOffset" : 0.0034, (In this case i offset it by 3.4mm outwards). your steamvr section should look something like this:
"steamvr" : {

"activateMultipleDrivers" : true,

"allowInterleavedReprojection" : false,

"background" : "#0D0D0DFF",

"basestationPowerManagement" : true,

"enableHomeApp" : false,

"installID" : "230575028536847019",

"ipd" : 0.060799997299909592,

"ipdOffset" : 0.0034,

"lastVersionNotice" : "1.3.20",

"lastVersionNoticeDate" : "1553731712",

"mirrorViewGeometry" : "312 187 935 706",

"playAreaColor" : "#FFFFFF00",

"showStage" : true,

"supersampleManualOverride" : true

}

Your IPD is exactly the same as mine (measured by my optician). Have you come to a conclusion about whether the Index is usable for you.?

Waiting to see the Cosmos full reviews as it has a range of 61 to 72 mm according to the HTC support line. As a flight simmer hoping that the AcerOjo is a high res solution with manual IPD but rumours are that its not going to released in Germany and hence not Europe.
thanks

I have a 70 ipd so I just made it with the Index. However, with a bit of foam and know how you can force the Index to go bigger or smaller though. The lenses are spring mounted so you can push or pull them further apart / together than what the Index IPD is set to. this link shows you how.

Thanks for the link, still really looking for a direct comparison with my IPD. Pity not possible to try a Valve Index before purchase, Cosmos maybe more likely to be stocked locally. An ideal would be a trade show in the UK where you could try out all of the current models but not aware of one at present

Will try the foam instead of cardboard i have now with the Index, easier to put in and out with other players.

That with Spartan27089 screen distance IPD code mod for addition correction, I haven't tried. The spacer feels just fine for 72ipd, as in the OG Vive adjust, not cross-eyed during or after for me. Curious to see the difference but it looks perfect for me already, so if not broke..

After trying everything to get my eye's to focus and look right, I thought about returning this and not wanting to ever at the same time. The display resolution looked great through at least one eye, but the images between the two didn't line up. The spacer is a quick fix and will push the IPD between the eyes.

Mine is 72 and The Index works okay for me, I do wish the lenses would go little bit farther apart though...
