Which VR headsets are compatible with Steam?
Which VR headsets are compatible with Steam? I want to know if there are any cheaper options than the Vive that work with enough games to make the purchase worthwhile.

At these time i do not think you get anything with as good room scale tracking
For really cheap and not amazing you can try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.loxai.trinus.test
With your phone (no trackig beyond geyro)
I heard you can also use OSVR but not sure how good it is

Basically, steamvr supports any vr hardware. Googlecardboard, gearvr, osvr hdk, durovis, daydream, tango and any other hmd you could name can be used to enjoy steamvr apps.

Super low cost easily asseccible or obtainable household items can be hacked together to create very rewarding but simple 6DOF tracking for hmd's. The intro to this youtube video is great at describing some possibilities like how to use wiimote controller and a homemade trackir like device to give 6dof. There are a suprising number of games optimised for many head tracking methods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F96Le29UcSM

Apps like VRidge and TrinusVR plug mobile devices into steamvr.

Valves own tracking solution can fairly easily be added to any hmd or any other vr device or object. This option is definitely the most expensive to invest in initialy but as two base stations can track an unlimited amount of devices could prove the most cost effective in the long run. SteamVR Tracking HDK and Vive Tracker pucks are just two methods, buying the hardware fromware HTC accessories being a third with many more possible alternative ways.

Valve developers highlight how SteamVR Tracking is every bit as useful for mobilevr users as it is for pc vr users in this Dev Days 2016 SteamVR Hardware talk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhzUn0gmkEU

It amazes me how plug and play using mobile devices for hmd in steamvr games is. Using the openvr drivers for hydra (from steam store) and freepie will allow any input device be used in vive only apps.

Even if there are no openvr drivers for you r device it is still possible to use it in steamvr!

Does the openvr method along with freepie allow for uncoupled aiming from head tracking in half life²?:steamhappy:
