My review of Ardennes Assault campaign
1. You cannot save at any time.
2. The objectives are too often extremely specific without being specified clearly.
3. A.I. cheats as hell (your squad getting killed in about 3 seconds by an enemy squad or a light vehicle)
4. Fear the unrealistic and incredible armor of the Ostwind.
5. The mechanics of the campaign vs your companies strength vs manpower available is unexplained and have tragic consequences. If you haven't reinforced sufficiently one of your company, you loose the game and have to restart the campaign.

You have to restart the campaign all over again many times because you cannot afford a single lost battle. And you will loose many because of all the points I mentioned above.

Don't buy Ardennes Assault! it is broken. As of August 29 2015

Stupid trial and error boring and raging system...

A very long campaign, not because of content but because it is a highly broken path.

I finished the campaign several times with no problems. Must be your playstyle. Or maybe try on a lower difficulty first?
Ardennes Assault's main issue has always been the price... $40 for just a single-player campaign was way too expensive.

But during this sale, it's actually a pretty good deal.

As for a few of the specific points:

* AI cheats in most games when you play above a certain level. Like Civilization games, or most FPS games. So, did you play on Hard right away? Because if you play it on Easy, the AI is certainly not cheating.

* I found most objectives to be pretty straight-forward, actually. The only real complaint I would have is that sometimes a timer wasn't given to indicate when supply trucks you needed to destroy would begin leaving the area (that said, once they began leaving I think a timer did pop up to show how long until the next truck would start pulling out). But really, the campaign holds your hand a bit much through the first 3 missions or so (4 if you include the tutorial mission).

* The mechanics for reinforcement are, again, pretty clear. And there are always guides people have written to clear things up, as well as just using Google is something is ever really that hard to decypher.

* 'Highly broken path' is referring to what exactly? You have a set number of battles to play through, and between them you have just a sort of simple meta-campaign of figuring out how to prrevent reinforcements from losing battles escaping to other battle-sites. And the campaign design is actually pretty solid.

* I don't remember at the moment, but I thought you could save the campaign during battles themselves, actually. I might be wrong on this, but if so, I know for a fact that you could save between battles any time you wanted. So common sense would dictate that you always save between battles if you can't do it during... but I sort of feel like you could save during them anyways.

* The only unclear thing about the AA campaign, for me, was the scoring... it wasn't clear the first time that saved up requisition would be all that worthwhile, and I had figured keeping your companies as close to 100 men as possible would be one of the bigger scoring issues. So I reinforced right before the last mission, only to then see that if I had saved the requisition, I would have actually scored many more points.

---------

TL;DR - Ardennes Assault is a pretty solid campaign, and its main weakness was always the excessive price. But right now it's a great price, actually, during this current sale.

You absolutely don't know what you are talking about.

There is no save.

About the objectives: sometimes you don't have any supply from owning flags, you have to take objectives to get some (this depends on the company type). This is unexplained. Sometimes, there are two main objectives in the briefing but only one in the battle. Secondary objectives are most of the time defended by overwhelming forces.

Reinforcement of your companies is unexplained anywhere. If you start a battle with half or less strength, you can't win it because you will fight at 1 vs 3.

A.I. cheats. I have no problem with that as long as you still have a chance to win.

This is as it is now! I don't know if Relic did some changes to A.I. lately, affecting the campaign without proper testing. This sounds like it.

If you spent all your points on upgrades and you don't have any left for reinforcing a weak company, you have to restart because you can't win a battle with it.

You have all these interesting possible upgrades but you have to spend all your points on reinforcement, or most of it.

There is no save.

You can save between battles so if a battle doesn't go your way (invincible Ostwinds) you can just exit the game and resart it and you will be back at the start of the mission.

The Ostwind glitch was meant to be fixed in the previous patch notes maybe they haven't sorted it still.

It would be nice to have some explination on how company strength works, but I haven't had too much trouble with it.

The only main problem with it was the original price for only single player content was extortion, with the current discount it is very good value.

Well tbh. I have no problem with objectives, no problem with cheating AI, BUT! you lose a battle and you have to start all over again? You serious? Lol no, im playing on easy now.. Just looking back how I actualy lost it. I got this mission where you have to defend VPs with paratroopers company, so I did it like I'd do in a MP game, what a wrong idea my friend.... You play vs OKW, who's got like unlimited amount of resources, access to elite panthers Ostwins and P4s + all the light vehicles, and if you think those are squishier then in MP, oh my friend, how wrong are you they are actualy more durable. So I have been overwhelmed by all this mechanized stuff, and thought like "Ok im building AT stuff next time", but wait a minute.... THERE IS NO NEXT TIME!... it's over Johny.... Im restarting on easy, not worth the effort.

Lol you have to Alt+F4 or Exit to WIndows just to reload the last save. So if this is possible, why not implement a normal Loading/Saving system?

Read my previous post you can save and restart 1 mission you just have to close the game before you loose the mission then you can retry with out having to go back to the start.

They don't want you to do it that way, as it is a bit cheap, though when a PAK 43 an M1 AT gun and a Wolverine loose to 1 Ostwind I think restarting is acceptable.

you can press 'ESC' then choose 'exit to Windows' during a battle.

Got it really cheap through the humble sega bundle (or something along the lines of that), and I'm having a bunch of fun with it. Probably because I didn't have to pay the full price of the game itself or the DLC that is.

Edit: It was indeed the Humble SEGA Bundle, paid $12 for it. Humble Bundle is worth it, guys.

I played it on Hard difficulty. Was far too easy imo except for two missions: 4 star Bastogne Outskirts and Ouren. Ouren was actually really fun with its difficulty and it ended in a cliffhanger for me. Bastogne Outskirts is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ against 4-5 stars. You just wont win.

Final mission was meh. You get one Jackson and OMG a single 76mm Sherman that decided to come into existence for some reason. Really liked the little cutscene intros though.

Overall it was "ok", would have been nice if the AI was actually dynanic though ala Total War-esque. Glad I played it for free instead of paying a ridiculous $40 for it.

Have you kept all your companies at full strength Maschinengew...?

I ask you this because i watched on youtube and all games i found, the players had like 5 times more squads and vehicles than I could actually get myself and I wonder what i did so wrong to get so low on supply, especially at the beginning of a battle.

I kept them at around 2/3 strength most of the time. Barely even used the airborne company lol. The key is to limit losses at all costs. That means even individual models within a unit. Tank losses will hurt you greatly so keep them alive the best you can. Encircling sectors also removes enemy strength (they cant escape) and gives you extra requisition after each mission.

Thats what I did anyway.

thx!

I think there is save everytime you finish a battle, can't sure tho.
Wanakadan Aug 29, 2015 @ 6:46pm
I found that it is crazy hard on difficult setting, but pretty straight forward on lower difficulty settings. No problem saving.
