Calais-Duisburg road is popular because it's accessible by everyone that owns the game, goes through a common routing area of the map, and everyone else is driving on it. It is not popular because it's a challenge, requires skill, or patience. The only challenge is passing players without violating the rules or causing an accident.
There was a time when C-D was just a connecting road, with very few players even on a maxed server. That's because everyone was in Europoort. Those were fun days. It naturally progressed to C-D and hasn't changed since then.
I would gladly spend 12+ hours a day in virtual traffic jams on either road. But Kirkenes is far more fun.
