I changed mine to the mouse wheel up/down (down for increase, up for decrease, to match the lever by the steering wheel) so I can easily flick it on or off when it yells at me about it.

By default the key is '. This key being the apostrophe. (American keyboard, inbetween colon and eneter key.
The retarder has several levels. So you will have to tap the key several times. Occasionaly with crusie control the retarder will get stuck on. To fix you will have to turn it all the way on, then all the way off.
Is there some sort of indicator to tell me if it is on or off If ' turns it on, then what turns it off. or vide versa/
And what is the explanation of a retarder? What does it do and why is it needed. I got a new engine recently, my transmission was updated long ago.

I tried to reassign the keys to + and - but it doesn't seem to matter, and my cruise control won't work because retarder is on.
This is so frustrating that a single misclick can bring my game to its knees
