Steering with joystick is funky.
Is this how steering is supposed to work:

I move my joystick a little to the left and....

What happens: The steering wheel moves to the left SLOWLY and will keep moving until I center the stick. The input from my joystick is acting as a VELOCITY to the steering wheel.
What I want to happen: I want the steering wheel to move a little to the left and STOP. I want the joystick input to be a POSITION to the steering wheel.

After doing the movement above I return the stick to center and....

What happens: The steering wheel stops moving and doesnt return to center.
What I want to happen: The steering wheel returns to center.

I've played with the autocentering checkbox but it doesnt seem to do anything. Any tips?

FYI, as a real vehicle, the steering will center itself once you have a little forward motion. As far as the steering on your joystick, there's probably nothing you can do to make it how you want. From what I can see the velocity makes sense, if it was direct your control of the vehicle would be very difficult at speeds. :/

I would recommend a wheel if you can get your hands on one. You'll find it much more enjoyable.

I dont understand how an analog wheel should be different from an analog joystick. If you center the wheel you are using, I am sure that the steering wheel in game should center (correct me if I am wrong on that point).

You're doing it wrong then. The Wheel is regonized as an Axis, just as the stick of the controller is.

It's probably working as intended... you just need some forward motion for the wheels to autocenter.

I found the fix. If you choose the "Gamepad/Joystick" under the "controller subtype" option, the steering wheel will behave as I stated in my original post. If you choose "wheel" under "controller subtype" it now works the proper way. Seems like a bug, or at least a weird design decision, in my opinion.

Glad you found the fix :)

How do I set it up so that the joystick works as a steering wheel? As the Billbo asked. It used to work that way for me. I haven't played in a few years. I can't set it up in this "new" setting.

Hey there I'm using a logitech 3D Pro joystick (from old flight sim days) and able to set it up quite nicely. What problem do you have?
