Question about the logitech g27 wheel
I'm thinking about buying a logitech g27 wheel, but I don't think the mounting device will fit my desk. Is it possible to use this wheel without bolting it to the desk?

The clamps are built in to the wheel unit so I don't think that'd be possible, unfortunately. You'd need to clamp it to something.

Damn it. I need to change my desk then. All that for a stupid truck game.

Thanks for the information.

Simple solution, use some large C-Clamps to clamp a board (maybe an inch thick, four feet long and 2 feet deep) to your desk with 3 inches of overhang to allow clearance on the wheels built in clamps.

i can recommend buying the Wheel stand pro. http://www.wheelstandpro.com/
Have it my self and its realy great, easy to move and stove away and a solid piece of craftsmanship (stronge metal and good clamps) shipping whent very smooth and got it in 4-5 days, worth all the money

If you have money to burn try playseat.com.

G27:
11 inches wide
1.5 inch depth clearance from desk edge under desk (for clamps)
6.5 inch depth clearance on top of desk
5.5 inch from desk edge to wheel bottom edge (i.e. sticks out that far)

My G27 is clamped to an oak desk that has a rather slippery polyurethane finish. I put a piece of non-slip coated fabric under the base both to protect the desk and stop the base from slipping. The non-slip material is a rubberized urethane coated fabric of the kind used to line kitchen cabinets and drawers. It is very popular for use in RVs (recreational vehicles) as a no-rattle solution. You can also find squares of this kind of material used for beverage coasters.

+1 for the Wheel Stand Pro. I use it with a Fanatec GT2 but it's available for all kinds of wheels. Its quality is actually better than the wheel. It's heavy, extremely sturdy, it doesn't move at all and you can fold it and change its angle/size easily. I can't remember how quickly the delivery was and I can't compare with playseats or other stands since it's the first one I got, but I'm really happy with it. Before buying it, looking at the pictures, I was afraid it would move left and right... I use it to play in a league with Forza 4 and F1 2012 and it's been perfect so far. No issue there. After a few weeks harassing the H-shifter I might have to tighten up the screws holding the gear box, but that's all I can think of in terms of negative.

One of the guys I race with recommended the playseat, so if you've got enough space and only race/drive in one spot that's something to consider as well.

I switch between the PC and the Xbox and I don't have that much space, so the stand pro just suited me better.

IMO forget the clamps (I used to use clamps with an MS wheel and an Ikea desk.. and I'll never ever go back to that again). I'm as happy with the stand pro as I am with the wheel.

If it's in your budget, it's definitely worth the money.

If you don't want to spend the money on the stand or the seat, maybe just get a little creative with your desk, assuming it's one of these desks that doesn't really matter to you as the owner, maybe using a router you can thin out the bottom of the desk where the clamps sit so that they fit (if that is the problem).

I did this on one of my desks because the desk had ridiculously thick top so I had a buddy come over and router out the area on the bottom side of the desk where the clamp sits on the desk to make it thinner to fit the wheel I was using at the time.

Of course if you have a really nice desk (like one of those Victorian desks that cost thousands of dollars) then you're not likely to want to do this to it. Of course if you've got a desk worth thousands, then $150 or so to buy the stand shouldn't be a problem either. lol

I've tried multiple times to use my wheel without clamping it to my desk (since I have to clear my desk to clamp it) and it never works out good, it slides all over the damn place even though it's got supports on the bottom side that are shaped to conform to your legs.

start buying som sort of cloth to but under it,
http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_product_matting-non-slip-magic-stop-90cm-natural-2mag90nat_P6650114.aspx
We had it on board the ships i was working on, to put under dinner plates and stuff, nothing will move in rough sea :D
but if you realy dont want it to move i only se the option to screw it on to somthing, using the the holes in the buttom of the G27, might want to build a wheel stand on your own like this guy ( a bit extream imo)

you might be abel to build somthing out of PVC plumming tube and wood, a bit cheaper then iron.
BTW if you want the shift paddles in Carbon like Chilicoke he sells them on his website

so since I have crossbar under my desk that is 2.5 inches away from the edge I can still use the clamps fine? cuz I seen somewhere that says the the lower arm of the shifter is 3 inches deep

Why not buy a Wheel Stand Pro... that way you attach the wheel to a stand and it gives a more natural driving position as you can alter heaight, wheel angle etc
