You just throw in the key you get in your box. Shows up in your library, then download it from steam anyway. Put your box in the closet... or just buy it off steam in the first place and save space.

And a tree.
Of course I'm hualing logs when I say that.

It might, but I would say it most likely will not. This game was avaliable for purchase before it was on Steam, and thus can be downloaded with many different digital download services. As for as I can tell, this game does not require a steam account to play, and does not have any DRM to speak of. Most games in similar situations do not allow you to use retail keys on steam. The reason for this is becasue it cost money to download games from steam's servers, and if steam is not getting any money out of the games, there is no point in them offering the digital download service for free.

The price on steam is not that great, its cheaper elsewhere, so its up to you if you want to pay extra to have it on steam or pay less to get it from another digital download service($30 on greenmangaming, gamersgate, Amazon), or buy it in a box.
