Bad performance on Linux
I experience the game to be lagging in-game, so much that that I caused a tragic highway accident. The menu is fine.

I am using the latest amd driver (13.11 Beta) with a HD 5750, on a Core2Duo 2.2 GHz.
The game is in 1280x1024 and low setting.

Other more demanding games (HL2, L4D2) work fine.

I know my system is a bit old, still, it should be able to run. Would you not agree?

What are your experiences? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Launch `top' command and see what's causing the lag. Is your CPU burning? Which process is taking the most CPU time, what is your RAM usage? Is your system swapping processes?
If you are running the game on Ubuntu, try some light WM instead of Unity (which is a resource hog right now). XFCE, LXDE or even KDE4 should be fine. Avoid GNOME3.
The game runs fine on high settings for me using nvidia driver 325.15 on GeForce GTX 560 Ti. Archlinux. For Linux i seriously suggest Nvidia cards. AMD drivers still sucks on linux. I'd give AMD another year or two before actual improvements to their Catalyst drivers are realized.

If the game runs fine on Windows it is probably the AMD driver's fault.

I agree Nvidia is the best choice for Linux currently. Their Linux drivers are on par with the Windows ones.

I just checked the CPU statistics, and the cpu is definately working close to max. The system does not appear to be swapping.

With my specs it ought to run smooth, at least, in low settings. Does everyone with an AMD card have the same problems?

I have sent a mail to support, I will post the answer here.

I have ATI 7850 and game perfomance worst than windows and ultra graphics looks worst too. But I glad that games are porting to that platform. And nvidia cards now have better perfomance on Linux
Just to tell and in case it help you. I use here too a old rig of 5-6 old with linux Mint 15 here.

Still same old cpu Quad 2.4 Ghz (still overclock at 3.4) but I think (maybe i'm wrong) this game only use 2 of my 4 cpu. I only updated my Graphic card recently to Nvdia GTX 760 2gig memory. I run this game at full detail and no lag at all here at full detail 1920x1080.

The only time I noticed lag, I was running this game and copying a DVD on my HD in the same time. (I think this game seek on HD once a while) then get the little lag but no crash. :)

Then, you have the choice, try a powerfull Nvdia video card in you rig, to check if you have an improvement (Here worked very well). Or maybe you have a software in background taking your cpu preciouse time.

I have similar experience, when I activate some feautures (especially mirrors), game gets a bit laggy. I have found, that it drains all avaliable CPU power. On dual core system, CPU load was always 50%. After enabling Nvidia Threaded Optimization, it runs better and CPU load is 70%. So it looks like it can't use more than one core.

I can recomend to look if there is something like Threaded Optimization in AMD driver or to install low weight WM and run the game on top of it instead full feautured desktop (I am using razorQT+openbox and it is much faster than when running under KDE).

P.S. Can anybody do performance test - same HW Linux and win to see if it is linux related bug or just slow game engine?

Also check out my blog about your intel processor performance. I have a script to help boost it.http://orkultus.wordpress.com/2013/07/08/getting-full-performance-out-of-your-intel-cpu-in-ubuntu/

I have it running on ubuntu and it run good ...so the windows users can kiss my ass

Good to know Ubuntu based OS have hard time with the ajustement of the multiplier based on the load. Personnally, I don't have this trouble since I remember I desactivated this fonction in the bios (Fixed multiplier) . (It was a new fonction in core 2 cpu if i'm remember correctly) And it was already there not always 100% fonctionnal with Window too. (the reason I desatived it.) at least 5 years ago.

I just say this to say, there is another way to have fixed multiplier, by the bios if your motherboard allow this.

The Windows version in Wine runs a lot better than the native version in my (very limited) experience. Max settings in Wine gets about the same as min settings on native. So you might want to switch over to Wine if the native performance is lower than you'd prefer.

This is crazy. Upgraded my PC specifically to run ETS under Linux with no lags.. Now it's Ryzen9 3900X and RX5700XT, but it's still lagging at ultra setting (125% scaling). It's rather fine when driving on the highway, but in the city it's terrible. On Windows it's nice and smooth. This is a huge disappointment..

Fixed this by (1) forcing use of proton (2) running the game with 32-bit OpenGL

I am having the same problem with AMD Radeon Series graphic card on ETS 2, i.e. crashes, sound remains goes to black screen, and then says no signal, which means reboot, or it completely locks leaving display running and no sound. Checked for *dmp files nothing. everything else works fine.

You say you fixed it, but you don't explain how you went about it, i.e. how did you force the use of proton, second you don't say how to run the game in 32-bit OpenGL instead of 64-bit OpenGl.
