Nothing has changed recently as far as I know. you can sleep multiple times, but there is a limit, after which it will not let you sleep any longer.
If you need to use sleep to only drive in daylight or night time, then the easiest way is to use the dev console command to set the time:
g_set_time 0000, using the 24 hour clock. Check the guides for instructions to set up the dev console and use the time set command.
