Having said that, it's more fun and flavorful to give them something better, and also affords you the option to hop into a somewhat nicer truck and drive it for a change of pace.
Absolutely no effect, they'll take and handle 25 ton loads in a 360hp truck, because they aren't actually driving on the road.
Ideally SCS will change this in the future so the truck factors in, but at the moment it doesn't.
For example:

I drive a 460hp 4x2 Iveco Hi-Way and take 25-ton loads all the time (and did even when I had the base 310hp engine). Maybe I'm misunderstanding or not seeing where you're getting that 11 ton number?
Ah I haven't experimented with the droppable axles yet, so I don't know how they perform. I just know you can take any load in the game with a junky 4x2 truck with the horsepower of a lawnmower :)
So many vexing questions :D
Tell me about it! For such a key part of the game you think there would be more documentation on it. Ideally the script would be editable and/or configurable, or vary by driver, or something.
sorry, your results were purely psychological. you thought they did better because you thought they should.
It has been confirmed by the developers that the truck makes zero difference.
