Since nobody wanted to answer the first part of the question, to hire someone, you have to first upgrade your existing garage, or find, and purchase another garage in another town (if you're starting out, you'll want to simply upgrade yours from a small (1 truck max) to Medium (3 truck max).
Once you've upgraded your garage, you then need to have a spare truck (IE, you have to purchase another truck for your driver to drive). Once you have the spare slots in the garage, AND a spare truck, then you can hire a driver to drive that truck.
As for the truck itself, the Volvo's in ETS 2 are definately the way to go when you start out. Some of their cheap beginner level trucks start with more powerful engines than some of the other manufacturers top-of-the-line engines! Same goes for the top spec. Volvo has the most powerful engine in the sim with 750hp, second only to Scania @ 730. Some of the other manufacturers (majestic comes to mind) top out at 4-500.
What I'd do, is use the MAN that you have for now, until you paid off your loan, and can afford another truck while still having at least 20K in the bank reserve after the purchase of a new truck, and take the new truck for yourself, giving the existing truck that you have now for the new driver.
Once you have 2 drivers working for you, then you can upgrade your home garage again to a large, to give you the top-level of 5 drivers, at which point you can upgrade with your own fuel and such. After you get that garage filled, then I'd look for another city to buy a new garage in. Best bet is to look at how many businesses are in a town. *Hint* the more business in the city, the more likely your drivers will be working, and not sitting on their asses waiting for work.
Have you discovered any recruitment agencies?
Do you play the Multiplayer?
Do you own your own truck?
In the Garage Manager window you should have an "Upgrade" button, near the top left (I think).
