Activating ETS2 on Steam

I bought ETS2 on a disc, as I didn't have Steam at the time. Now I have a Steam account, I would like to transfer the game, along with my profile etc. onto my Steam account. Does anyone know how I can do this?

You click on activate a game on steam and enter the key of the game in it when it asks too.

I've been looking for a key, but all I have is the 25 digit key for getting it without Steam. Is that the key I need to use?

It's the same key... you must activate ETS2 with that... And if you've got "going east", you must repeat the procedure for dlc with the other key you have! ;)

I tried exactly as you said, but now it's saying that my computer has had to quarantine a virus. Should I have uninstalled the game beforehand?

what virus did it say? steam didn't give you a virus just by entering that game key..

anyway, you do have to download the steam version of the game, so you may as well uninstall the original install. Just make sure you backup the profiles folder. It's located in > Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2\Profiles. Or just back up that whole ETS2 folder. That has your game saves and other settings and any mods you have.

It didn't say a virus in particular, just that there was a quarintined virus. Thanks for the advice. I might try it

Imo you shouldn't uninstall the dvd version, it can be useful having two versions of the game, f.e. when the multiplayer has been updated for the newest patch and your favourite mods haven't yet.

the problem is, it says there is a virus that had to be quarintined, so I presumed it was due to the code being over-used (not sure if that is a thing). I have a friend who recommended de-activating my anti-virus to allow it but I'm scared to risk losing my PC.

what anti virus? If it's even a halfway decent AV it should be telling you what particular file and virus was quarantined...

Steam definately isn't giving you a virus. Maybe a quarantined another file you had already downloaded?

and just for your peace of mind, a lot of programs will recommend you disable your AV when installing because some can screw up installations or just make false alerts during install.

I would do that, but I don't exactly trust myself 100%, and I know that if I mess this PC up, I'm screwed over for so much. Thanks for the advice- It is extremely helpful

the poster owns the game, you can tell by the little mouse symbol nest to their name when they post in a forum. It's not showing up in their account for you because it's not installed.
