Are there any newer games like this? seeing as it is 13 years old now
I just see this pretty high in top sellers, so clearly this game is still delivering an experience that people can't get elsewhere.

But is there really no newer alternative? I'm just curious. Have other devs tried to create something similar and failed? Or what's going on in this niche?

AFAIK SCS is the one on top and I've not seen anything with the quality of ATS/ETS2.If there is, put a link here and I'll check it.:steamhappy:

Multiple other devs have made half arsed attempts and failed miserably partly due to not committing fully.
You can try and look around. But you won't find anything that comes close to this.

The reason is simple: SCS has worked and improved on this game in the 13 years. Which means they have a huge head start, so to say.
So any game that wants to compete with this either needs to find a sub niche (good luck finding enough people who want to buy that) or has to deliver content equivalent to what SCS has done (highly unlikely).

SCS has more experience in truck simulation than any other dev team. Not only they work on ETS2 for 13 years but before that there were other games, starting with 18 Wheels of Steel back in 2002. So it's almost 23 years of expertise.
Others have tried but didn't succeed.
It could happen, but how? SCS have licenses from almost all brands of trucks across Europe and USA. They provide huge realistic maps. And best of all, top driving simulation with great controller support with many parameters to set the perfect experience of driving.
They will keep working on ATS and ETS2 for years. Their commitment has no equivalent on this particular speciality.
Especially the fact that they keep improving their games instead of charging players for a new one each couple of years with only little improvments from one to another...
Their games are not perfect alright, you could want more features, stuff that other games could provide, but the other aspects are not as good as what SCS does. The main one being the driving simulation.

Time mean nothing if the Simulator is a good one.
OMSI 2, is still more older but is always the number one by the Bus Simulators.
If you don't mind the bad graphics, very poor performance and optimization...

Also due to the suizidal AI that has no comprehension for you and mostly isn't even registering you?

Amen, brother. Reading this warmth my heart.

The game is currently up to date, even though it was released a long time ago. The developers have been updating and adding new content. American Truck Simulator is a slightly newer game from SCS, but very similar to ETS2.

13 years of constant development, additions, new features etc. is a very long time, i would guess, even AAA studios would have trouble reaching that amount of progress in only a few years full-time development, i personally haven't found anything else that had such a feature-set or completion. And there are still ways for improvements. And development is ongoing.

... as it is 13 years old now? That was the first release of the game with this name. Since then the game has been continuously been developed. Currently version 1.53 and probably a 1.54 Open Beta soon.

And as been said above, SCS have made truck driving simulator games many years before this title was introduced.

I can say SCS is one of the companies that are very dedicated to their games so dedicated that when they do a DLC for the game they go in the specific country/state to make realistic as possible

One example: off-road trucking. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1465360
Oh right I bought Snowrunner a couple years ago, but I only had a laptop then. I should try this again on my new pc

I haven't played Euro truck simulator since 2017. I liked it a lot, but it's such a weird time sink, it scares me a little lol
