Agree. But there seems to be other priorities.
That being said they would still need to rework every single service station prefab to add charging stations, and I don't know if that would be enough.
I tried driving the Renault E-Tech a few times and the thing barely gets 400km of range before the batteries run out and you have to ask for emergency recharge.
I'm pretty sure that the current map layout in ETS does not have enough service station coverage to make sure electric trucks can reliably drive from one end of the map to the other without ever softlocking yourself. They would need to a ton of service stations on top of all the already existing ones, and that would bloat the map.
Electric trucks are clearly intended for regional delivery, and trying to force them into a game whose focus and map scaling is long-range driving simply doesn't work. That's what we're seeing right now, and unfortunately it's making me question whether SCS still controls what gets put in their games or if brands have compltely seized control of the game for their own advertisement purpose, because what can SCS do anyway ? Say no to brands that are keeping the game alive ?
The gas stations are there. They need to be fitted with charging stations. That’s a large task since there are many different types of gas stations. Graphics and game mechanics need to be upgraded for the stations.
Then there is the whole charging mechanism. But whether it’s diesel or electricity it should be something that can be done.
I don’t think it’s a priority at the moment.
That's absolutely true, but they could have started with having the possibility to charge at owned garages which modeling wise is a simple task since there are only 2 types of garages that you can buy and deal with the rest of the world later, it adds some realism as that is kinda how it is irl atm, yes there are more and more places where charging is possible, but for long haul it's still far away from easy to manage.
Oh it's actually easy to implement. If they wanted they could enable charging at a diesel pump. Yes that would be dumb, but it's literally a def edit to do it. So adding a charging point is the easiest part of the whole thing.
As for proper charging points, it wouldn't take that long to update existing prefabs. All they need to do is figure out where to put them on a prefab and model them in. Then regen the map to make the changes, since a lot of ETS2 gas stations are the same prefab it won't take too long.
At owned garages they can just charge at the sleep point. It's basically a week's worth of work.
If they want to copy real life they don't even need to add them on all prefabs. They can limit them to owned garages and the big ones. At the end of the day, it's up to the driver to know when to stop for fuel/charging right?
The main issues are really down to logistics. How do they tie it into the current sleep system and the timing for deliveries. The easiest option right now, would be to only allow owned electric trucks to be used on WoTr jobs, that way the charging time won't be an issue.
However I don't think they will bother doing anything major until they start getting electric trucks in ATS as well.
Just quoting that bit as I know it's not too much work for SCS to do, but if it's indeed SCS waiting for an electric truck in ATS they could have have mentioned it by now as they were teased in the xmas stream.
As far as adding them to owned garages, which imho they should have done, they could also have done that for ATS even if they don't have electric trucks yet, if it's a matter keeping things easy to manage between the games.
I understood the reasoning for not having charging points when electric trucks were introduced in ETS2, but imho it's taking too long now.
Then again, I won't be playing the game with electric trucks :-)
*contemplating what I would do if we got a Daf electric*
That could be solved, when it ever happens, by limiting the job length you can do with the E-trucks like it is now in the quick jobs.
That way it can (mostly) assured that the range of the truck will fit.
If the player wants to drive longer distances outside of the job and runs out that is a selfmade problem then.
Also - when you accelerate take it easy. Don’t go full throttle all the time. Plan your driving ahead.
I have driven several jobs with ranges between 300 and 400 km. I don’t end up with an empty battery.
