The buttons on a G920 steering wheel
I bought myself a G920 steering wheel including pedals and H-shifter. I know I can assign the buttons to whatever function I want but What is a typical button configuration for these kind of gear? That could be a good starting point for my setup.
  • There are buttons labelled A, B, X and Y. Is that a heritage from a game controller left hand stick and what is that typically used for?
  • Same questions for LSR and RSB, Sounds like something with Left and Right.
  • Then there are paddles behind the wheel. Typically used for Gear up/down? or maybe turning indicators?
  • A "hat switch" formed like a cross. Much like the right hand stick on a game controller.
  • A button with the Logitech logo on below the wheel center. The horn?

I use the Left Paddle for gears down / getting to reverse gear and Right Paddle For gear Up

A button for changing the dashboard display
B button for turning on the running and low beam lights (1 or 2 Pushes)
X button for turning on High beams
Y button to turn on the wipers
Left Hat switch = Enter
Right Hat switch = Quick save
Up Switch to attach and detach trailer
Down switch for handbrake.
LSB for Left Indicator
RSB for Right Indicator

Pretty much a joypad with a wheel around : D On the right four action buttons, on the left the directional pad, below (on a joypad would be above) the left and right shoulder buttons.

Yeah, looks like that. But I have never used a joypad so that's why I wonder about "typical use" for a such. :-) Left stick/buttons (X,Y,A,B) used for steering/acceleration/brake and right stick/buttons for viewing/looking around?

Wait, do you want to use the wheel as a joypad? ^^' You don't need to set steering (wheel), accelerate/brake (pedals) on those buttons otherwise. Try to start from Oz's setup and play around with it to match your needs : )

By the way, I'm on keyboard only, just chiming in as a PlayStation (and older) console player ; )

I use all those buttons to control the vehicle. Handbrake. starter. Lights. cruise control. job page, map, shift, reverse, zoom, look left, right, up, Configure them how you want.

No no, I was only curious about the history, how they usually were used before they "mounted" a wheel around it. :-) For the my actual config those functions will be made by the actual wheel and pedals.

Depend how much arcade the game is and the controller itself. Generally speaking I would go with accelerate/brake on buttons (right side), steering on directional pad (left side) and shifting on shoulder buttons (when they are on front of course).

On a PlayStation controller I have usually six fingers on controls and the rest are holding it (with thumbs being the most busy as they have to reach out for 6 buttons and a stick each) ^^'

But when playing on PC, keyboard and mouse are my only tools. Others may tell you more about how they set up and use a controller for ETS2, but going back to the history of controllers and gaming may be very very long (since before I was born, more than 40 years ago at least) : O

The G920 is designed for use on Xbox, so the buttons are labelled like that of an Xbox controller (LSB and RSB are the shoulder buttons above the triggers). Its sister wheel, the G29, has buttons labelled to suit the Playstation (so has Square/Triangle/Circle etc). Both are compatible with PC.
