It is a awesome game, I started like you did. Got the base game on sale on a whim and got hooked, 700+ hours later I am still enjoying it. My main profile has 100% of the map explored with all the DLC and am level 92 or so.
Just driving around and enjoying the scenery is relaxing and it keeps getting better with patches, new trucks and DLCs.
One day I clocked ETS2 on the steam page and my curiousity peaked, so I clicked on it and checked it out. Obviously the first thought I had when I saw and read it all was 'How could you even enjoy this..? It's literally sitting in one place, driving a virtual truck'. Well, I went against my initial thought and bought the game on a whim, not knowing if I'd even enjoy it.
Started off with a keyboard then move on to a USB 360 controller, after that I started considering whether or not I could justify buying a steering wheel, clutch and pedals for it. Once again I went on a whim and purchased a G27, now I have 1613 hours clocked and counting so far on ETS2 haha. Now it's got to the stage where I'm contemplating getting an HGV license to drive a truck for real and just to think it all started on a whim, heh.

- AI mod - http://ets2.lt/en/traffic-density-speed-limits-for-1-21/
- No dead ends - http://ets2.lt/en/no-dead-ends-for-1-20/ (works with 1.21)

- Rusmap - http://ets2.lt/en/rusmap-v1-5-1-18-x-2/
- 1.21 fix for Rusmap - http://ets2.lt/en/updated-fix-for-connection-cards-rusmap-and-russian-expanses/
I also run with the Going East DLC and Scandinavia DLC (required by an increasing number of mapmods anyway).

Happy trucking. :)
Only clocked up a few hours so far but I'm desperate to pay off my loan so I can earn some (virtual) money that belongs to me.... but all those shiny shiny things to buy..... lol
Yeah, great game and the community doesn't seem like a bunch of A-holes either, unlike other sims. Makes a refreshing change
As for mods, I must admit I am stll in the process of exploring all that vanilla game offers, so the only mods I used were winter mod during last year winter (but I ommited it in spring, though I will probably put it back for the upcoming winter) and since now I started new profile were I started in Stockholm as Scania fan (which I am not, but just for the fun of it) I also put in mod to add indications on Scania dashboard and improve its display. That's all I tried so far.
i dont drive IRL and know nothing about cars or trucks or engines and such. would anyone mind explaining what the various upgrades do and they affect the truck please
I went on the net and found the Optimus Prime Peterbilt 389 mod, and would do everything just to drive this huge truck around.
I had seen my friend Alex play this game a couple of times and said it looked very boring.
"Come on! Who wants to drive a stupid truck all over Europe?! Looks so boring!"
In all my life I've loathed trucks and didn't had an interest in them at all. But thanks to my friend Alex who game me ETS2 as a gift, I've been hooked ever since and I have even bought a Logitech G27 just for this game!
As time went by I tried out an European truck, and Scania was the first brand to fall to my mind.
I learned a hard lesson and will NEVER EVER have disrespect for trucks anymore. Look around and see in your room and think of how you got your furniture or food. By truck of course and I've never felt so ashamed in my life before!
In fact, I had looked forward to a truck show in half a years time and it was all worth it!
I even got to sit in a couple of Scania V8 trucks and didn't want to get out, lol. Got to press the gas pedal and honk the horn, hehe. A dream come true!
The sound of the engine is ... I just LOVE it! In fact so much I have become a Scania V8 fan.
Size matters and cars just don't have it imo. Trucks have everything I really like. A huge engine and especially the V8, excellent comfort, a nice overwiev. sitting high up like a king or queen, henceforth King of the Road!
Conclusion: A big risk of getting late for work because of my truck spotting walking on the streets.
Happy trucking and 10-4!
Besides this, the more HP an engine has, the stronger it is. And I'll let someone else explain the different types of chassis', because that's a slightly complicated subject. But you can do fine with a 4x2 most of the time.
