There is no "better" it is entirely subjective and the player's own preference.
The game engines, GUI and file systems are identical, the only difference is the scenery and truck and trailers. Buy both and have twice as much enjoyment!

Same engine, same concept.

It basically comes down to where you would rather want to drive: Europe or the US?

Love the wide open roads and big rigs of ATS. And now it has real companies. ETS2 allows me to re live my days driving heavy haulage across Europe and the United Kingdom. Everything about both sims is great.

same concept differnt areas. if you like wide areas american. if you like mixed and hheavy haulage europe. fore my choice europe its looks with an oled even better than american.

How does that work if they both have identical game engines? SCS only use their own Prism GFX system in both games.
The ONLY difference is your GFX settings. Scenery may not be the same, but that is not a quality issue, that's a perception issue.

I could be wrong but...

I'm pretty sure the textures are more varied and detailed in ATS than in the base game in ETS2 (I don't have map extensions for ETS2 yet so I don't know how they compare). In my opinion you will notice it the most on the pavement, and shipping depots in ETS2 with dirt floors.

If I'm not mistaken the same engine can run objects with a higher polygon count than others (which you might not notice with good enough antialiasing). Aside from that, textures are going to be different in terms of how detailed they are, and how many of them there are in total. I think ATS might look very-slightly better because the polygon count of certain objects is higher and the textures applied to them are more complex. It's the same engine, only shaped and painted a little bit better. Which makes sense, they had more experience and resources after working on ETS2 😄

If you cranked up the antialiasing and replaced/added more textures to ETS2, there probably wouldn't be a noticeable difference. The edges to the low-poly objects would be smoothed out and the textures would be more similar in terms of complexity.

I am super new to animation and coding though, so take this with a grain of salt. Just my half-baked guess as to why some people seem to notice a difference between the two.

Why pick only one?

ETS2 is being constantly reworked in the older areas to the standards of the latest map DLC, as is ATS in the original older maps, currently California is being upgraded in sections.
I have all the map DLC for both games and I don't see any great difference at all, and the GPU load and fps in both games is comparable, which would not be the case if they were different.
The latest maps for ETS2, especially Switzerland and Germany, are the best quality I have ever seen in both games, and I have played them both since their release.

Take a look at Bern, in Switzerland, and tell me if it matches ATS, anywhere:

Better sound mod for trucks over 75 sounds Ats is more of a challenge. Run the manual with 18 speed .3.36 or 3.55
Ets has boring roads with bad traffic. Many places will have no traffic

A very valid point. The quality is constantly improving so it's hard to compare the games, and it certainly depends on where in each game you compare lol

If I'm being completely honest, in my opinion both those examples still look slightly lower poly (in particular the trees and the edges of the road on turns) and like the texture of the pavement has less depth to the shadows compared to ATS in general.

I believe the GPU load and FPS can very much be comparable with there still being a noticeable difference in poly count and texture quality. The amount of textures, and the size of them determines how much strain they put on your computer, not necessarily the quality of them. Having a few items with high poly count is comparable to having many more with lower count, and that is ignoring the differences in things like the pathfinding for the AI. Same engines don't have the same texture artists, map layouts, and number of objects in different games simply because they share UI components and physics.

I would expect them having similar performances is a result of the developers balancing what they add, with what they want to add, so that both games are similar and meet their target hardware requirements to appeal to a larger demographic. And if they have similar performance I would actually expect ETS2 to have slightly lower poly count and detail on textures because the layout of the world and pathfinding is way more complex. There are so many more objects and roads in ETS2 as far as I can tell without counting 😄

ATS has more open roads (Great American Road Trip) and leveling up is pretty fast.

ETS2 has less freeways, more narrow lanes, and tighter turning. Therefore it takes longer to level.

Check the DLC for both games - especially when there's a sale happening. You can get bundles of all the expansions for even lesser of a price.
