Ćhanging gears without the clutch in manual shifting.
So I cannot really graps the concept. I read some on it but still don't quite get it. I've set it to "when the clutch is presst" in ETS2 cuz that's what i heard EU trucks are like with this feature, and set it to last option in ATS cuz that what US trucks work i heard. But can't grasp how to operate it, how does it exactly work etc. Can anyone provide some good links where both the EU system and US system are explained like to a dummy? I know about the Steam guide on gear shifting, it's still to wise for me lol.

i cant speak for us trucks but this is how eu trucks are; most of our trucks here are automatic with manual override which does not require input from a clutch pedal, its just buttons, manuals are hard to come by and to buy new its usually by special order.

for eg,irl with a scania you rotate the gear selector on the steering column into drive, that is auto, press button on end and its now in manual then you would pull stalk towards and away for up and down change.

How i have it setup on ets2 is in 'real automatic' then assign a button to 'manual/auto change' then when you press said button it will be in manual or auto, in manual you would then select gears yourself, given most trucks in eu are now auto this is as close to real life i find.
Looking for info and explanation of floating gears in manual shifting only thanks.

well as far as floating gears goes for the older trucks and american trucks you set off and come to a stop with the clutch, then to change gear without the clutch it works by changing gear when the engine speed and transmission speed are matched, that is floating gears.

whether it can be done in game i wouldn't know, there may be mods

It's literally an option in the settings if you have a shifter. I'm looking for a detailed description to a dummy of how floating gears in EU trucks with manual shifter works, because it's different than US'a trucks.
How do i know when engine speed and transmission speed matches?

Floating gears always works the same. When the gear box is not synchronized you basically have to do it - like on the still common US fuller boxes, pretty common in Europe as well up into the 80es. If they are synchonized, like in all manual EU trucks since the 80es, you will just be able to change gears like in a manual car.
But you can basically float gears on any manual gear box - at least in reality and when you set the option allowing both in ETS / ATS. I had to learn it for my fathers Volkswagen bus, where the synchroniser rings were broken, but could do it with any car I had in my life when I wanted. And these were different brands from Ford through Mazda and Renault to Volvo.

You don't know when to shift, you learn it. In reality with your ears, because it will make grinding noises when you mess up. In ETS / ATS because the gear only will change when you have it right. And every drivetrain behaves differently. Do you have 12 or 16 gears? Which differential ratio do you have? etc.
I would recommend to drive your truck with clutch at first and see how much the rpm change on shifting. Once you have a feeling for this, you can try to float gears:
Change up: go into neutral while releasing the accelerator. When you are at the target rpm get the shifter into the new gear.
Change down: go into neutral while releasing the accelerator. In neutral give the accelerator a short hit, when the rpm is at target value get the shifter into the new gear.
I know why i couldnt get gear floating. I had a misconception about it and mixed few different things and it just didnt add up. Now that i get it, gear floating is such an easy concept to grasp lol. And the different way you float gears in EU and US trucks? I was talking about fast splitting option in the game lol. No wonder i was confused.

I just cleared the clutch key assignment, now I use my gear stick without clutch
Not exactly what i was looking for xD Anyway, floating gears is easy as hell when i finally cleared out the confusing and mixed information.
