What is the correct way to remove a mod?

Colored map is outdated/disabled and I want to install a similar one.

Should I just unsubscribe or remove from the list of active mods first?

Disable the mod then Unsubscribe then check your documents ETS2 mod folder just to make sure.

The game gives me a warning when I try to load my profile. It requires the mod I disabled. Can I ignore this message?

If you have installed any special equipment that requires the mod you want to uninstall, e.g. special extra lights that are not found in the vanilla game, you must first sell this equipment before removing the mod in question.
Similarly with modded truck models that do not exist in the vanilla game, these must be sold before removing the modded.

It's the Colored Map mod. It just changes the map

A map template can be removed just like that. No worries.
