2. "The wrong way" can have something to do with which gps setting you have chosen in game settings:
What setting have you chosen for your gps in game settings?
- There are the following 3 options:
Best
Shortest
Small roads
3. Real life gps are not always 100% reliable either.
So don't let the GPS be your boss.
Therefore, follow the good advice @garyh2462 gives above.
4. Do you use mods?
5: Devs. almost never read here. If you find bugs you want fixed, report them on SCS's own bug report forum:

It was always trying to send me down minor roads. God help any truck/autohome drivers who try to use it.
I knew the road so ignored it and there was no reason for diversion.
I now use Google maps on phone and it's so much better.
Meanwhile, if you are at a complex intersection, zoom in the GPS map (F5) it is quite easy to see where you should go. Drive slowly because it is a real close-up zoom level...
For normal use, on a medium zoom level you can often see what direction you exit the intersection (straight ahead, left or right turn, ...). Get a mental picture of the intersection and it should be quite easy to take the right exit.
When I'm already on the road, I try to interpret the arrows on the gps, and when for example it insists that I go to the right lane, and I think it's useless because then I have to go back to the same lane I was in, I look at the map, to make sure, and ignore the gps.
Or change settings. Maybe the default setting is not for you.
well, duh! you've never driven irl i guess.
