What is skyboxes?

Release 49 on both ETS2 and AS say"skyboxes", but, I have NO idea what that means.

You raise a good point, since that's basically developper jargon they're using (even if a lot of gamers with some mileage/experience know what it's about) . Vast majority of people probably have no clue what they are even talking about. Surprising, since they seem to have a pretty large marketing team whose job it is to convey those things to what's basically normal people. On a more serious (or is it?) note, besides the name, the skybox of ATS / ETS2 is actually a sphere that follows the player and the camera.

The correct term here would be "skydome" since there is no sky below the ground.

There is just void. Which is not really a sky. It would be, if below you could see the moon and the stars at day and the sun at night. Since these aren't there at all it is just a dome.
