I presume it already has Steam DRM, though I've not actually checked.
They add new content to the steam version & retail....but the final 1.11 patch is not even out.
And if you own a key of the game you can register it on steam if you want, and test betapatchs.
Yes, I admit I pirated this game. I enjoyed it, didn't have a job or anything to pay for the game at the time. Now that I have a job and income, I bought this game, expansion, and buy the DLC paint jobs as well. Course, I erased all previous history I had playing ETS2 and started completely brand new. I felt that was right in my mind that I start fresh rather than continuing an older profile.
Besides, piracy is not the number one reason why DRM exists. Developers these days don't really release demos anymore. I'm glad SCS is still putting demo's out with a good restriction that can be lived with unlike their previous, 60 minute demos.
The copies I see on various sites of ETS2 I've seen in the past were that of Steam copies, often time the latest version. Piracy will always exist until the end of time. Its something we'll have to live with, regardless of whether or not we like it. Now-a-days, I don't really even pirate games anymore since most are just rehashes of the same thing in a different setting. Gets boring after a while. Grant it, same could be said of anime too..
PS, I also bought another copy of ETS2 for a friend, so.. most of my pirating is real specific games, mainly from companies I refuse to support any further. (I'm looking at you EA)
I don't think it is fair when devs do lose out on money for their work but looking at the situation with clarity, the devs lose out on nothing if the pirate was never going to buy the game anyway. If we were talking a physical non-digital object and the user had stolen it then yes, i would agree that the creators have lost out on a sale.
Games are so cheap now and often can be had for excellent prices eg in bundles so anyone of the 100,000 who should have bought the game but didn't just to be a turd... should hang their heads in shame - you are just killing the industry.
As for the devs here, do whatever you gotta do to stop those 100,000 from playing non legit versions of the game - makes me wonder how you even know the numbers playing pirated copies of the game? Is the software 'phoning home' then?
If it is, that would suggest some form of a communication link from the software and could that not be used just to render the game unusable.
Game dev story had a novel way to beat the pirates - the devs themselves put a pirate only version of them game up on to torrent sites whereby you always fail in the gameplay due to the game you design not making money due to piracy - genius!
If only mate, best way the devs can think of the pirates is 'it's free marketing' when the pirates talk about a game they like to their mates (as not everyone feels the same way about pirating games thank feck).
As for the guy further up who pirates EA's games, I feel exactly the same about that publisher these days but it is still a turdy thing to do.... even to Electronic Arts devs.
It's wrong, but DRM rarely works, and gets cracked in a week or 2?
Of course, I'm against using it, without paying, and should suport the game if they really enjoy it. I used a cracked version of ETS2 and now I'm own it cause the game is totally worth the asked price.
And, many people on steam do use this to check on games.
I just did a quick check of a couple large torrent sites, and ETS2 is consistently in the top 10 most seeded torrents in the PC games category.
Whatever, I think the devs should a better way to encourage pirates to "pay for it if they enjoy it."
Good developers and publishers are difficult to come by nowadays.
