Why are my shadows so jagged???
Whenever I play ETS2, the shadows seem really jagged, or "sawtooth", particularly under guardrails. The shadows inside the cab also have a sawtooth edge to them. It is very, very distracting.

When I watch other people's videos on YouTube, I don't see those really jagged shadows. Their shadows seem fine. So why am I getting them, I wonder.

In the graphical options I have shadows cranked all the way up. I've tried 400% scaling with full in-game AA, and also the roextended NPI route (100% scaling with no in-game AA). The jagged shadows are still there. So's the flickering on fences, foliage, etc. NPI miight help a little, but I'm nowhere close to what I'm seeing in videos on YouTube.

Is anyone else experiencing jagged shadows?

What are some things I can try to get rid of the jaggies (and flickering too hopefully)?

Thanks!

Known issue with the current AA in the game.

If it's a known, unavoidable issues, then why would so many of the ETS2 videos on YouTube seem like they have smooth shadows?

Would a graphics (skybox) mod change the way shadows appear? Most of the YouTubers I saw are using graphics mods.

YouTube does a ton of compression meaning that you will lose a ton of detail including AA issues.

My shadows are (pretty) smooth. Maybe you could post a screenshot?

A screenshot of how they looks on your side may help. Check into your config.cfg file for shadow related entries, if values there are matching your settings. > Documents/ETS2.

Ok, here's a screen grab showing my jagged shadows:

https://tripalot.com/issues/img/2023-06-27-ets2-jagged-shadows.jpg

My in-game shadow settings are maxed out (Ultra and High). Here are my shadow-related settings in config.cfg:

uset r_cloud_shadows "1"
uset r_fake_shadows "2"
uset r_sun_shadow_texture_size "4096"
uset r_sun_shadow_quality "4"

Another thing I notice is that as I inch forward, the shadows jump back and forth. While I was getting into position to take this screen shot, there was a light post casting a shadow on a nearby wall; as I inched forward, the light post's shadow kept jumping left and right, which was very distracting. It's as if there's a rounding issue in the shadow angle calculation.

Impressive ^^' I get the same with quality at "1" Are you using some third party software that is forcing in-game graphics to different settings? In this case try to disable it for ETS2.
what GPU do you use?

I tried setting the shadow texture size to 8192 but still got jagged edges.

I noticed that if I go into camera mode, and move the camera around, the shadows look much better. It's only when I'm in the cab that I have those big "saw teeth".

My GPU is a 3080 Ti. I'm not using any third party software that I know of. However, whenever I start up ETS2 it mentions something about an SDK. That might have something to do with opting into the VR beta at some point. Does everyone get that message?

Nope. Never seen it on my side, but saw few reports in a distant past, maybe a plugin?

If you want, copy the whole content of your game.log.txt file (it is into Documents/ETS2 folder) on pastebin.com then leave here its URL. It may contain some hints if there is something altering the game (from its inside at least) : / Or give it a look yourself.

Do you perhaps have an AMD card?

I have seen many solutions for anti-aliasing issues (some are really complicated configuration). But the issue is in the game itself, I don't believe it can be solved for good.

And I agree with each side, sometimes its smooth but also jagged at times in my game. But I find out that the higher graphics setting I have, the less noticeable the issue.

Maxing out Euro Truck Simulator shouldn't be an issue for Samsung Fridges nowdays; i already had to put 400% res scaling because of (feelingly) no existent AA or LoDs; flickering still exists but its less distracting; now those shadows DUUUUUDE its annyoing af and theres seemingly nothing we can do about it besides editing the shadow res inside the cfg

That's the best we can do (with the given game settings).

To get rid of the flickering, you can try the latest AA mod.

I have no issues at all with "jaggies".
Everything is smooth as a babies bum.
Run @ 200%, SMAA ultra, SSAO high, 3417 x 1440 @ 144hz on 34" UWD monitor.
RTX3090 24gb GDDR6X
Most other settings on high.
