Why Are There So Many More ETS2 Players Than ATS Players?
I was reading an old thread and someone pointed this out. I checked Steam Charts and, sure enough, ETS2 is pretty damn popular, running at least four times as many players on average.

Why is that?

older game, better mods, larger population served, etc,...

Over at ATS forum there is a old but still active thread about this. Many possible reasons there. https://steamcommunity.com/app/270880/discussions/0/2967267880874751271/

Fact is that no one knows for sure. Maybe SCS do some analysis of the active player statistics but even they can only make educated guesses.

I think it's very understandable.

This game is way older and has accumulated way more players than the counterpart. Some of them would like to play both, whereas some of them are already satisfied with the older one, given the abundance of mods and updates. If not all the ETS2 players would buy the new game, it is almost not possible for ATS to have more players than its counterpart.

Besides, if a new comer is to decide which one to buy first, I am sure a majority of them will go to ETS2 as they have very well developed map DLCs while you have to wait a long for the ATS to fully expand the map, not to mention the flexibility to add features through mods.

I base this on general trend, though I'm not sure about the geographical attractiveness offered by each game to the current players.

I'm a little intimidated by learning to drive in Europe as an American non-trucker, but the offering here is certainly attractive.

Thanks for the thread direction, it makes sense that the Eurozone would be more appealing to the larger international community as one potential factor.

First of all it is still a game, with settings that range from almost arcade to deep simulation. You don't need a driver licence at all : D Try the demo and see it for yourself, both games have one : )

Would be nice if ETS and ATS were combined into one game. That would give us the opportunity to expand business world wide with the same profile.

I am actually pretty happy about having a profile for each game. But you can consolidate all your stats from both games on world of trucks if you pick the right cargos.

I'm an American and have both ATS and ETS2 with virtually all the DLC (just missing some paint jobs I don't care for) and have quite a number of mods including ProMods map expansion. I find them both pretty fun and relaxing to play.

I used to prefer ETS2 over ATS, but that was because ETS2 had so much more map area to roam. Now that ATS is catching up, I like them both equally well. ;)

I play this because ATS has insurance and trashing truck is so much cheaper.

That won't work because the licences are specific to the game and not for any follow-up game or merge.

Now I'm a bit surprised. I didn't think there were so many Americans interested in ETS.
But the other way around, many European truckers would like to drive a US truck, ideally across the States. But since it doesn't really work for most people, you do it virtually in ATS.

@slowsilver:
It's just a little mod to include the insurance into ETS. (-;

No I play Ets because I don't want insurance. Makes making money easier and pretty much takes away the only way there is to get in economical problems. I don't want to use mods.

In-game, there is practical little difference and unlike real life the AI is predictable and you can learn how it tends to behave. I would say you probably don't even need a real life driving license to enjoy these games or a deep understanding of driving skills.

Just basic understanding of road & traffic etiquette will get you through the game. The "sim" of this game is much more in the experience and feeling of driving through an accurate feeling digital representation of Europe.

As far as the AI goes there's one thing I like better in ATS than ETS2, ...when there's a road side accident or a police inspection in ATS ai traffic just keeps on going like there's nothing there, in ETS2 they go from 120 to 50 in a split second just before the scene, of course it's not so bad when you know it will happen, but it gets worse when they just overtook you and instead of staying in their lane 'till they have passed the scene they will move over and slam the brakes.

IRL people don't do that, they either move a lane if there's space or they take their foot of the throttle and slow down a little,....
