When I originally got it, a bit late to the party, I was unsure if I would play it much, I only got the base game.
It has turned out to be my most played game here on steam. I gradually added all the DLC and buy any DLC as soon as it is available now. I also got ATS and all the DLCs as well.
SO IMO I think it is worth getting.
And if you buy the essential bundle later on you dont have to pay for the game included, just for the items you dont have.
edit: There is a demo to try out - Try it :)
I'd go into this game with a very long term view both in terms of time and money invested.
But that's just one man's opinion. I say give it a try, watch videos on the DLC maps and see if you want it. If you're going to be spending hundreds of hours in the game, the choice is simple. The more map to explore, the better.
Did you miss all the updates to the original game map? The ones that SCS are still doing? Germany, Austria etc? Try reading the blogs and update notes, you'll see they are committed to improving the whole base map, even the UK. All for free , by the way.
I know they are, just like they have been doing with ATS. But there is still a long way to go. From what I've seen there have been a few updates to the old map, but most of it is still the same. You can even see where the new road textures meet with the old.
"Excluding downloadable packs, the base game features Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, north-eastern France, Germany, northern Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, western Poland, Bratislava in Slovakia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom."
There's plenty to drive around on, your experience will still be satisfying.
I bought Cabin Accessories a week after buying the game though. Now that one is a must-have imo.
