Are the truck sounds getting worse
I have been away for ets2 for a while just installed it and now the trucks sound like a sick garbage disposal. Have they drop the ball on the sounds or is it just my ears playing tricks on me.

Have you tried changing the sound in the options?
Have you tried to open the window?
Have you tried using headphones?

You're not the only one complaining about this matter. Personally because I play ETS2 while listening to radios, I don't give much of a hoot about it. There are mods, I've never tried, that presumably make the sounds better. Unless the devs will also consider the sounds are awful and unrealistic (which I doubt will happen soon) that's it folks. Honestly I don't find them that bad, but that's only my opinion. I guess it's also a matter of perspective, and this subject can be approached from many sides of view, as it already has been countless times here on steam.

Cheers

"Worse"
There couldn't be a more subjective approach to take than saying "Are the truck sounds getting worse", so there can be no objective answer.
They are what they are, if you don't like them, what can anyone here do to help, apart from saying "use a mod"?
If the many previous threads are anything to go by, "you can't please all the people all of the time" is all anyone can say. If expectations don't equal reality for some players, SCS cannot predict what will be popular, all they do is record the trucks and use those recordings in the game.
If ETS2 is anything to go by, modern trucks are made to be quiet and a safe environment for the drivers, not an open pipe racing sound, and videos on YouTube confirm that trucks do not have loud, intrusive engine sounds in the cabin anymore. Perhaps it is a European H&S thing to work in a quiet, safe environment if you spend all your working life there, as SCS are based in Europe.

Some of the truck sounds are not that great tbh. If you want decent basegame sounds try the latest released trucks like the MAN TGX or the DAF 2022.

On one truck mod which was a Scania conventional, once I switched the game play to sequential shifting, it did have a good sound of an old Detroit Diesel from the 1960s or 1970s.
Yes, the truck sounds are 15% worse than before, but soon they will be 10% better. For a baseline, the original truck sounds started at 82.47% good.

Nope. It's a matter of standards. We once liked the old base game graphics. New DLCs have better graphics. When you see good graphics you expect good sound too but the sound is the same old sound or almost.

Just like you, I have been away for some years. When I returned I noticed amazing graphics in the new DLCs but I felt the engine sounds were bad. Acceptable in Volvo and Mercedes, average in Scania, bad in Daf and Iveco etc. Loving the Scania I installed a sound mod for Scania sounds and then I started to dislike the default Volvo and even more the Mercedes sound. It's the illusin of comparing.

Notably, the game audio worsened a lot (in my opinion) when ETS2 introduced FMOD (an audio engine library) some time ago.

The simulation audio and mix is really bad in the game. I don't mean ill to the devs that must be with hands full of issues to fix, and credit is due that the game still gets updates, thanks SCS!.. But I believe it was a mistake to switch the audio library, I think it went to a much worse foot than it was before FMOD.

In particular, how the game "mixes" when the engine fires and "reduces the volume" of everything else, is very strange as we leave the pedal and the outside audio suddenly becomes loud. I believe the ambient sounds should be placed well to mix up without the need of lowering other volumes. I also believe other truck sim games (I believe from SCS themselves?) like 18 wheels of steel do a very good job in the audio.

Another sound that never went well even in 18 wheels series are the horn. I have noticed one even with "echo" in the recording. Sounds really strange when used in an open environment or in the road. I believe the horns sounds should be relatively easy to improve a lot to add to immersion of the game.

Unfortunately the game is not really a good one for audiophiles. But it does a much better job in engine sounds/pitch than spintires/mudrunner. ^^

Truck sounds have always been trash. And there are plenty of sound mods out there that fixes this. And at least two sound modders go as far as recording the actual trucks from multiple microphones (interior, exterior, engine and exhaust) and do what scs for whatever reason are incapable of.

I doubt that any modder has access to the trucks to take those recordings. SCS are the ones who are taking the actual truck recordings. And so far, the only legitimate argument that I've heard is that SCS hasn't implemented those sounds as well as people would like; they don't apply them to the entire accel curve, etc. Modders take those recordings and manipulate them. A couple modders, according to folks that use the mods, do a good job of application, however, most simply make the sounds super loud because...? I guess some folks think louder is better.

I am in the group of players who don't really care since I am almost always listening to music and I'm not trying to impress my neighbors by having the engine rumble knock their dishes out of their cabinets. The sounds are fine to me. ;)

You are completely wrong, here is a quote from Zeemods website concerning his Daf Xf 106 sound :
"Feature list:

A full engine sound set, professionally recorded from a Euro 6 DAF106 with microphones positioned in the engine bay, intake and exhaust.
Complete engine RPM spectrum recorded, producing a very detailed sound.
Engine brake and retarder sounds.
A full set of interior sounds such as indicators (different versions depending on if driving a 106 or 2021 truck), wipers, park brake, low air pressure warning, switches, windows and more.
Other effects include the gearbox sounds, engine metal fatigue ticks, air brakes, axle lift and failed engine start."

And this is a quote from the SCS website concerning Kriechbaums Volvo FH13/16
sound :
"My Volvo D13TC engine sound is finished. So i've made a pack that includes both D13TC and D13K engine sounds.
These sounds mods are based on my own recordings.
Recorded each range of 100rpm's precision in .wav stereo format 24 bits 96khz."

different strokes for different folks, bro

Here is one modder who uses recorded truck sounds off the actual truck, in this case a Volvo, and has been for years:
https://forum.scssoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=159192
As I drive a Volvo it fits the bill.
Here is a possible solution to sound deficiencies. Been using it ever since release:

All I can say is to try them and if you dont like them or not what you want they can be deleted with no probs.

Big thanks for the heads up about the mod. Its a nice thing the game modding seems to be well documented and all, but I wish even more that the "stock" experience would be better.

I can't stand the neglected turbo gauges. :`(

In the case of Zeemods - he definitely uses real trucks to record sounds. He hires them out for a day, which is why his mods are paid. He even takes photos to show where he puts his microphones. I've got a couple of his mods and the difference between his mods and default are plain to see (or hear rather).
I've yet to see SCS post pictures of them recording truck sounds, which leads me to believe they don't, or if they do, their implementation of the sounds into the game after recording is atrocious. Their engine sounds have gotten better over the years, but still nowhere near the same level as Kreichbaum or Zeemods.
