It is just a normal racing wheel from Amazon, one that also works with xbox etc a "SV200"
I may have solved something. for some reason the default controller config for steam has the "left stick" steering axis only set as "steering" for normal driving mode. all the extra modes like automatic, sequential etc. have it set as "joystick". But there is no way to change this in steam controller settings, it just jumps back to "joystick". I also changed something the joystick setting to "linear" instead of circular? that seems to have solved it a bit, but i still don't feel the wheel is returning to the centre as it should.
Thank you, I will give that a try.
in my opinion, if i turn the wheel 45% of its full motion to one side, the wheel ingame should turn 45% of its and then stop moving. instead it will go all the way to left lock at a medium speed. if i turn the wheel 100% it goes fast, if i turn it 5% it goes very slow.
And then if i move the wheel to the centre, it stays as is, only if i then turn it the other way, will the ingame wheel start turning back to centre.
