Yes, it is realistic.
Unfortunately, it's not completely realistic, as they never clear. The first time I came across one I thought I'd wait for them to clear the roadblock. It was a car on fire that was already extinguished. I waited hours, and hours, and hours..... they never moved.
Eventually I found out that the road-block / detour doesn't clear until you complete your job. That part is unrealistic.
Had a bad one beginning of this year, driver clipped a trailer that cut him off, blowing his steer, and sent him and his truck over the center divider, killing him. Had the interstate shut down for 5 hours fully, and a total of 7 before all lanes were open again. I drive past the spot every day, it's obvious where he went over. One of our customers, too.
To say it's not realistic, is a bit exaggerated. With how fast time flows in-game, you can't realistically remove it. Why is it so difficult for you to simply find an alternative route? Because you don't want to do the realistic thing, doesn't make the existence of the thing unrealistic.
I've disabled them, but only because I deal with that nonsense enough in real life as part of my job. The game does not provide enough alternatives where these events occur. The implementation of the feature is realistic, the avoidance of said feature is unrealistic, but that's how it goes with every feature in the game. Fatigue is unrealistic, and is by far the most unrealistic thing I've had to deal with in-game.
Btw what truck do you drive?
Sorry, hop between ATS/ETS2 forum a lot. This incident was in the US. I drive a tire service truck(Ram 5500) to change tires on semi trucks/trailer, well any commercial vehicle.
Usually it doesn't get that bad, but it can, and does. Usually only gets fully shut down if a tow truck needs a weird position or they need to fly someone to a hospital.
I don't know how big the roads are over there, but here in germany we've many 2 and 3 lane freeways (per side) wich can easily be blocked off completely with a crash. Obviously it's sometimes possible to still keep one lane open with smaller accidents, but in case of a big accident the highest priority is to safe the lives.
And on top of that it might obviously also be saver to block the traffic completely to get some evidence of what happened on one side and being able to remove loose parts and leaked liquids, before many people drive over it on the other side.
I turn off detours because they are ridiculous. But it's still just a game so I don't get too worked up about it.
