Just pay attention on the pop-up windows so you don't download something other than a mod. Best practice is to use extensions to block ads and other possible pop-ups. For an example ABP Plus on Chrome.
Most mods are shared using sharemods.com and I never had any issue with that.

And as said before a addblocker are prefered to deal with the Sheremods/Modsbase links, I'm on FireFox and have Ghostery install and it deals with all pop-ups and adds.
