ETS2, Linux, Intel HD3000: Not starting.
Hi,

I've just installed ETS2 on my ThinkPad T520 with Intel HD3000 and 8GB of RAM running Debian Jessie.
Well, the game won't start at all. When hitting the "Play"-Button the screen goes black, the sound starts for <1s and I'm going back to my Desktop. After that the resolution is changed to the game's resolution.
If I change the config to use windowed mode or if I just use the safe mode: Does not change the result at all.
The game.log.txt clames the following errors several times:
00:00:00.435 : <ERROR> [gl] Failed to compile shader: /effect/generic/_shd/fd8f4ac87dcbb51a3f2133c49147e92e.glsl.vso 00:00:00.435 : <ERROR> [gl] 0:2(10): error: GLSL 1.50 is not supported. Supported versions are: 1.10, 1.20, 1.30, 1.40, 1.00 ES, and 3.00 ES 00:00:00.435 : <ERROR> [gl] Failed to compile shader: /effect/generic/_shd/1dc895ba7b2a829aa6491aa6d30671b5.glsl.fso 00:00:00.435 : <ERROR> [gl] 0:2(10): error: GLSL 1.50 is not supported. Supported versions are: 1.10, 1.20, 1.30, 1.40, 1.00 ES, and 3.00 ES 00:00:00.435 : <ERROR> [gfx] Failed to create pipeline setup for (/material/ui/white.mat - ui)
(File names change inbetween, of course)

I guess it's a problem with my Intel HD3000. Is there a workaround for this? Or a fix? Or any other kind of solution?
I'm thankful for every tip anybody can give me! (Besides tips like "buy a new computer" - I won't do that for just one game…)

Debian Jessie is ancient. You need a rather modern version of Mesa for the game to work. Previously only OpenGL 2.1 was required, but since the last update the game needs at least OpenGL 3.2. Your HD3000 GPU hardware supports up to OpenGL 3.3 as long as you use a modern Mesa version (>= 11.0).

Well, Jessie is stable and I'll stick to that. Than I'll have to wait for some months (or years. ;)) before playing ETS2. I can live with that. ;)

But thanks a lot for your answer!

If you really don't want to upgrade your operating system, you can always switch to an older ETS2 release through the Steam properties dialog of the game. The 1.24 branch should work fine.

Pay particular attention to the "OS" and "Graphics" lines.

ETS2 Minimum Requirements for Linux:
OS: Linux Ubuntu 12.04
Processor: Dual core CPU 2.4 GHz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce GTS 450-class (Intel HD 4000)
Hard Drive: 3 GB available space
Additional Notes: recent binary ATI or NVidia drivers (MESA may not work reliably)

Thanks, that seems to work. Great! :)

I was aware of that. And it was just a test. As I said before: If it would not have been working, I would have been fine with that.
It was not my intention to blame anybody for anything.

I wasn't insinuating any blame from your side.
It's not a problem with your GPU. It's just not good enough for current game.
I cannot remember when SCS changed the minimum requirements to HD4000 but I think it was around v1.21 ??

you could try a multiboot linux system?

The HD3000 GPU actually is enough for the current game version as long as your drivers are up to date. Of course you have to lower the graphical settings to achieve decent frame rates but it certainly is playable. At least on Linux, on Windows and Mac the driver lags behind in terms of features and only supports OpenGL 3.1 IIRC which isn't enough, so the GL renderer on Windows/Mac probably doesn't work with that GPU.

Alright then. It isn't good enough to have any kind of satisfactory game-play.
How's that then?

Should have been around the time the scandinavia dlc came out, as with the release of it the graphics of the game got updated as well.

Nope, got rid of that more than ten years ago, don't need that anymore. ;) And would not have solved the problem. Now I'm playing an old version on low details, I'm fine with that. Don't have much time for that anyways. But thanks for your tip. ;)

Well, as we are talking about my computer, maybe I should answer to this:
You are right, it's by far not perfect and I guess it could do a lot better. Maybe it will when (or if) I deceide to buy another computer. But that won't be very soon.
So now on low details it's okay for me, I can live with that. But of course I'm aware of the fact that ETS2 can do a lot better. ;)

I'm with ya.
For about the first 6 months of playing ETS2 (a few years ago now) I had a 512mb nvidia card.
It was k i n d a okay? but at night? with high beam on? and it's raining?
The game played like a herd of turtles marching through a swamp.
unununium Sep 16, 2016 @ 4:53pm
Yes, that roughly describes it. And I'm laughing at your description. Great. Thank you! :)
room217au Sep 16, 2016 @ 5:27pm
Then I upgraded to nvidia something-or-other (it was so long ago now that I don't remember the flavour) and it was 1024mb. That did the trick. I've had a GTX750 2gb for some time now. The important thing to note is the 512mb card was 64bit. And that's far too skinny for any kind of gaming.
unununium Sep 17, 2016 @ 6:13am
Well, if it would be just a new graphics card I would not care and just buy it. But in my ThinkPad I will hardly be able to change the card. ;)
But I mostly use it for other thinks and I don't see the need to replace it. Not for a game.
