Constant Updates, but no notes as to why!!
I am getting very annoyed that I get updates on the game, but no notes as to why I am getting them. I am protective of what is downloaded onto my machine, so I want to know what updates, downloads, installs, I am getting, and more importantly what they do to the game, or my system. Anyone else feel this way, or is my love of protection for my machine miss-placed?

Yeah its a bit random last bunch was to make way for that subjectively pointless Renault DLC. Maybe this one is prep for the Russia DLC or a clean up of some sort. I agree with you on the fact there is no patch notes explanations to why we are getting these random updates.

an update to the game could come though there own servers or steam.
If its SCS doing the update they might push it out first then write up notes in game update which is its own thread and can only be added to by the dev
If its STEAM then it could just be files for running the game being updated but usually that comes in a distribution of files but if that is the case then we will not get notified of what is happening because SCS only tells the player base of what is updated in game.

Also check there actual forum on SCS Software.

Good luck.

It won't be the Russia DLC as that's been shelved indefinitely for now.

If you wonder why you get the update even if you don't own the DLC, it is to make sure you're compatible with DLC owners in the Convoy multiplayer mode.

Regarding Heart of Russia SCS made a statement just yesterday:

The download wasn't 14GB. Applying the update is not a download. The download was 40.5MB.

So its essentially a stability update for the new build. Least they are pretty quick with addressing such stuff it would take Rockstar Games about 8 years.

Yes, they are. SCS is very dedicated to their product which also reflects in the reviews of their games.
Considering that ETS2 was released about ten years ago, it shows that there is quite some staying power for a game that was a Singleplayer game for the majority of its existence.

To the OP of this thread, I just want to point out that if you're that paranoid about what goes onto your computer, you should consider uninstalling anything in your Steam Library and maybe even Steam itself. Any developer can deliver updates and patches to their games and Steam will install these automatically by default. You can change this but only so that a game updates when you launch it, otherwise there is no way to opt out of updates. This is a DRM after all, you only own a license to the games in your library.

Regardless, your paranoia is pretty misplaced because the chances of game developers pushing out a patch that would harm your computer, especially intentionally and maliciously, are none. That's an easy way to face a class action lawsuit and completely burn any reputation they have into the ground, no dev is going to do that. Steam may already take measures to ensure that kind of foul play isn't possible to begin with anyway.

Sadly, your protective feelings towards your computer are a little bit out of date. All of us lost full control of our computers when Windows started to demand constant connection to the internet. We now have very little information on who is accessing our computers and when. Many companies now have update software that installs itself silently and runs constantly in the background without our knowledge.
Every month, we hear more stories about corporate interests breaking the law, accessing our personal information, and exploiting and abusing it for profit. Just recently, Twitter was fined $150m by the US Federal Trade Commission for harvesting mobile phone numbers "for security purposes", but then passing those numbers and other private information to advertising companies. Right now, there is a problem on Twitch, where many users are finding that they have been blocked from chat channels on all streams, and Twitch will only allow them back in again once they provide a mobile phone number. This has been reported on Reddit. Many users are complaining about it.
Our personal information is *very* valuable to American capitalists, and we just have to accept that we no longer have control over our computers, and we have no real privacy any more. The only way to be properly protected is to log off from the internet and not use a computer at all.

There is no "fresh install". :steamfacepalm:
The patch is applied to the whole base game, after it is downloaded, if you have a large number of DLC then the folder will be 12 - 15 Gb, if you have just the game itself, 4-5 Gb, but there is no 14 Gb download.
Steam changed the way it reports updates and patches, look at the downloads page while it is downloading and you will see it download the data, then write it to the folder and verify it.
If it doesn't verify it, do a manual file verify straight away, Steam has had problems recently with faulty downloads.

Because an update doesn't simply ADD size, they also UPDATE (well, duh) things. If a text file has 10 characters removed, and then new 10 characters are added, the file will have the same size, it won't be 10 bytes bigger.

When downloading an update thru Steam, it shows both download size (in this case 40 MB) and then installation size (in this case 14 GB).
