Super Ultrawide Monitor (e.g., Odyssey G9) - How well does it work with ETS2?
I'm considering getting an ultrawide monitor (Odyssey G9) to increase immersion in ETS2 (and other games like Flight Simulator, Assassin's Creed, and other open-world titles).

Does anyone have experience with a G9 or another super-ultrawide monitor (5120 x 1440)?

In ETS2, does it let you set your FOV wide enough to not need to turn the view left and right after [most] intersections? Does it eliminate the need for TrackIR?

Also, how's the performance? Did you have to dial down any settings to get good frame rates? What GPU are you using?

(I've got an RTX 3070 and I'm concerned that it won't get good FPS at that resolution. Of course, any GPU better than a 3070 is crazy expensive right now.)

70 to 80 sees the sweet spot; I can see some stuff on the left and right, and although it looks stretched, it's not *too* bad.
74 degrees should be your correct FOV if you measured your viewing distance accurately at 36 inches (use a tape measure), so your empirical sense matches well with geometry :lunar2019smilingpig:

It does, to an extent, but your monitor isn't a "real world" window - it's a flat plane, so while sitting closer increases your FoV in the real world this doesn't translate well into the game and doesn't fix fish-eye lens effect which is why you can't go much over 80 degrees without seeing it in most games no matter what screen size you have which is somewhat annoying :steamfacepalm:.

I've always wondered if some tech from VR could be used to fix the fish-eye issue as the VIVE PRO 2 has a FoV of 110 degrees and the fish-eye is not there.
The OP has a curved (R 1000) screen. The analogy is to holding a picture frame of the correct dimensions in front of you at the correct distance. All fish eye should be eliminated, and if you get your nose close enough to the screen you should be able to go past 80 - the OP should hit 80 degrees at 33 inches and 90 degrees at 22 inches, although I suspect that there are practical limits involving the your actual peripheral vision... I don't see a distance from the screen of 4 inches working so well for example :lunar2019smilingpig:
I think that VR can get the higher numbers exactly because it is designed around that super close eye to screen distance and the placement of the screens which you adjust to your PD.

I have the same monitor (Samsung Odyssey G9) and you still get fish eye as you go over 80 degrees FoV and there's nothing that will solve it as it's an artefact from the in game camera. :steamsad:

The only possible way of fixing it is if there was some kind of post processing to compress the edges of the screen which must be how it is solved in VR but I've never seen it done in a non-VR game.

Understood, if the in game camera is just screwed up and has a lens that does not capture the angle called for, (is wide angle when it should not be) there is nothing to be done. Odd that SCS does not get that right.
Of course you would generate fisheye on a G9 at any FOV, 70, 60 degrees you were far enough from the screen.

It's a super interesting subject and this post has some really great videos about why FoV works/doesn't work.

I am using 3440x1440 with RTX 3080 and all grafic settings on max beside anisotropic filtering and antialiasing is completely off which nobody needs anyways with 400% scaling..well my monitor makes 60 Hz but I nearly never have rubberbanding or flickering..all smooth and as Louis Armstrong sings its a wonderful world ;-)

I know this is quite a late reply but I'm using the Odyssey Neo G9 and I really like it. I am using it with a monitor arm so I can sit as close as possible.

I have a 3080Ti and I'm running everything on Ultra and 200% resolution. No problems.

I have bought the 57" G9 and am having the exact same issue. As the OP and others have stated. I seem to have two options

1:- Make the FOV so small it defeats the object of having an ultra wide monitor in the first place.
2:- Make use of the ultrawide but have stretched mirrors that look like Jumbo the elephants ears. Also the quality of what is in the mirror doesn't match the quality of the rest of the game. No doubt because its all distorted and stretched. If I zoom out to have both mirrors in view (why I bought it in the first place) the cab looks far too narrow and the mirrors as said far too wide.

This is very annoying! I paid £1500 for a monitor and £750 for a GFX card for this???

Is it too much to ask for perfection after spending over £2 grand ?

@ KETTU - I have a monitor arm also (another £200) but do not want to have to be so close to my monitor its like a pair of glasses on my nose. I am also worried about sitting so close how this affects you site after ten years of daily use. I sit around a meter away what to me is close enough.

could have done some research befor you spend that money...

anyway, you can try use multimon mode. it has a preset for 3 separate cameras.

Thanks. How exactly do you research a problem before you know it exists?
South park done a few episodes on Capt Hindsight.

Ill look into your link. Thank you.
