Limiting the automatic transmission when going uphill?
In real life cars with automatic transmission it is possible to limit the gearbox from going into the higher gears. Normally the driver puts the gear into D and off he goes. But e.g. when going uphill it might be better to stay in low gear. I think there is a position "2" and sometimes even a "1" for that.

Is such a feature modelled in the game automatic transmission? Does IRL automatic transmissions for trucks (as opposed to cars) have this feature?

I know I can quickly switch to manual transmission when needed but that feels a little unrealistic. And in automatic I only have Drive, Neutral and Reverse positions.

ETS2 does not support directly switching to those gears on their own when in Automatic.

Real life trucks do have the ability to do so, depending on Year, Make, Model, Region(US/EU/etc).

In ETS2, you can set a keybind for Automatic/Sequential switching, allowing you to switch on the fly to sequential mode. I use this to keep a gear when playing, and simply turn it off when I want to go back into automatic. Very useful in ProMods on certain roads. Should be near the top of the Keybinds menu.

In irl it may not be in trucks, because this is a different gear system than in cars.
in the newest trucks there is a scan of the road against the front these days, and it sees that the truck is climbing or descending, and if the revs don't go in the direction of the upshift it doesn't happen.

And in the game you can even upshift or down a gear even if you're in automatic gear,
is hidden in the options.
This way you always have control over your gear. eg braking on the acceleration is then possible.
Automatic does not mean that you no longer have a possibility, you remain in control of each gear. you just don't have to depress the clutch anymore.

This happened in 20th century cars, buses and trucks.
Also preventing transmission to change bigger gear is lot more useful when driving downhill, in uphill driving mainly low powered vehicles benefit this feature on small roads.

Nothing unrealistic, roughly 21th century vehicles have this feature.
You can do it ingame like Reese posted above.
