Reverb G2 & ETS2/ATS compatability
I know this is a bit of a rant, but most VR users here in the ETS2 and ATS community don't have G2s, and we have a lot more trouble getting this to work than the Oculus folks. I'm writing this in an attempt to solve the Reverb G2's generally inability to play nice with the oculus betas for both ETS2 and ATS.

For the past several weeks I've successfully gotten VR to work with ETS2 on my Reverb G2. With no big issues other than the usual menu problems (easily fixed with 'reset standing position) or unresponsive controls on startup (fixed by pressing, then un-pressing the wIndows key to focus out then back into the game).

Unfortunately, as of today, ETS2's no longer even loads on my G2 in VR mode.... after weeks of working just fine in VR. I start it from steam, and can even hear the sounds of the game, but then am stalled, out in the default steam overlay as it shows the Euro Trucks is 'loading.' That loading screen doesn't disappear as usual. I've tried everything from setting tweaks to full uninstall/reinstall and restarts. Nope.

None of my settings have changed since then, and I even tried going back to earlier versions of the oculus beta, and yes, I'm using the -openvr command. All of this worked before. No settings changed. Now it doesn't work.

I get that this is in testing, it's a work in progress (really aimed at the oculus and steamVR flavored headsets) that we're lucky to even try - but this is so frustrating. First it works... then it doesn't. Not mad at the devs (who are great) or the community (which is awesome) - just frustrated because this game is THE way I unwind after work and .. yeah, 2D mode is still incredible... but that immersion was transcendent. Some of the best VR I've ever experienced (and that's AFTER playing Alyx).

While I'm here, I should add that the Reverb G2 does not at all work with ATS. Not because VR mode doesn't work with the G2. It actually loads up great. It doesn't play because when you launch a job and enter the cabin, the pause menu is on *by default,* and cannot be un-paused. I've tried absolutely everything. The pause button is simply unresponsive. I got it to un-pause once - by taking off the headset, setting it down, waiting about 30 seconds, then un-pausing. But the moment I put the headset back on, it paused the game again. So frustrating!

Thanks for listening to this, all. I don't think this'll be fixed, but it was good to get that off my chest. :)

Hey, I have had Oculus Devkit and Oculus CV1 and HTC Vive and enjoyed ETS2 and ATS
since they got VR Beta, it's really great and the community is top notch. I have bought every DLC not included country paintwork, and tried this way to support SCS for their supreme work.

i decided that it was time for a VR headset upgrade and went for HP Reverb G2, I have no problems playing all my VR sim games (DCS, Asetto series, etc) that I enjoyed on Oculus, but sadly NOT ETS2 and ATS.

I really hope that we can get support for this headset too through -openvr as Vive and other headsets do.

Thank you

PS. For me ETS and ATS starts, then nothing happens and they quit. Nothing in headset.

I believe proper functioning of the "HP Reverb G2", requires support of the 3rd major VR protocol, i.e. 'Windows Mixed Reality" (the other two being "Oculus" and "SteamVR"). I'm sure sooner or later this will happen too.

Your reply is interesting as I have been considering for some time now replacing my "Rift S" with a "G2". So will you please tell me what's your GPU and CPU? And whether G2 is your 1st VR-headset and if not what your previous VR-headset was and how does it compare to your G2 in terms of picture quality and screen-door effect? And finally, something very important, at what ETS2-"scaling" setting do you run the sim in VR (<100, 100, 200, 300 or 400%)?
Thanks in advance, as your reply will help me make up my mind.

This is my third headset have had an oculus still have a valve index and a reverb G1 running on an intel I7 rtx2060 scaling 100% the G2 has no screen door effect the G2 is the best by far.Hope that helps

It sure does. Thanks a lot.

Lots of great feedback here, thanks all.

The G2 has a lot going for it (powerful, no screen door effect, comfort and the built in audio, which is fantastic because the speakers pack a punch but don't touch your ears. I've had my G2 since November and here are the four problems it has: 1) requires a top shelf PC to take advantage of graphical capabilities 2) the way the wire drapes over the left shoulder 3) the built in WMR controllers are awful and 4) compatibility with Oculus and SteamVR is really, really buggy. This isn't the G2's fault - just a consequence of so many competing VR platforms and no inventive from Valve, HTC, HP etc. to improve those cross-platform communication tools. After all, they're competitors. As an example, the 'WMR for SteamVR' app here on Steam, which is necessary to run Steam games on a WMR headset, is never updated.

Like the user above mentioned, you can set graphics at about 130% render resolution for many SteamVR games using the G2, but honestly, it's diminishing returns, and how it performs depends entirely on the game. For example, my PC runs Microsoft Flight Simulator almost flawlessly on ULTRA settings in 2D, but In order to run at a nice FPS in VR, the VR graphics must be rendered below 100% and graphics settings dialed way, way down. Another example - Half Life Alyx runs great on the G2, but in the game settings, you must set graphics to 'Low' to see 'Ultra' graphics (which are AMAZING), and setting graphics to 'Ultra' will display 'low' graphics. You also have to set your floor height from the WMR floor height tool in order for Half Life Alyx to set the right height.

Back to the topic at hand - when ETS2 VR worked on the G2 (it no longer does), the graphics settings could be dialed up to Ultra and it ran flawlessly. If ATS could fix the 'starts on pause and can't un-pause' issue in VR, it would also be incredible. The Truck Simulator games are beautiful in VR - but if you're committed to running them that way, I highly suggest you don't get a G2 until these issues are acknowledged and fixed. I doubt that will ever happen.

I'd like to hear ppringle3550's opinion on this, since he does not seem to be experiencing issues running ETS2 in VR on the G2. And also about his experience on running ATS VR on the G2.

reverb g2 no problems on ets2 or ats2 runs on -openvr steam vr wmr full settings works great

Glad to hear it's working for ya, ppringle3550! :) That's awesome! Hopefully some bug fixes will come along eventually to help with the really weirdly specific issues I'm having.

I was thinking about going for a pimax or G2 But didnt know if they would work with ETS2 or ATS so went for the rift S to replace my CV1. reason being its hard to read road signs till ur on top of them in VR due to low resolution. so getting a pimax would solve that as it has the best resloution on the market right now. even better than the G2. Vive and Index have the worst at the mo. Even the rift S has better resolution than the vive and index now.

Interesting, as the pimex wasn't on my radar. The g2 is great because the screen door effect is basically gone and the textures look great, and the refresh rate is nice. I've gotten into the menus of ATS in VR and played quite a bit of ETS2 jobs in VR (before it stopped working), and I can't stress enough just how good it looks. If ppringle3550's comment above is any indicator, G2 owners aren't really having the issues I'm having. You might be just fine with the G2. For now, to get my VR sim on, I'll stick with MFS's VR mode, which runs perfectly and looks absolutely incredible on the G2.

solved my Rift s probs by changing resolution to 2560x1440 scaling on 400% SMAO low SSAO low HDR, DOF on and everything on high or ultra for everything else.
Can now see further ahead to see speed signs and road sign to react to them faster. no judder and everything runs smooth.
Think a lot of the probs r down to ur rig rather than the game settings.
Tinker around with settings till u find the settings that work best with ur HMD and PC.
When i was 100% scaling i had a lot of judder and the HMD kept losing tracking.
pick the resolution closest to what ur HMD has rather than what ur monitor has.

Thank you! I'm not experiencing any judder or render scaling or graphics problems at all, thankfully. I just can't get ETS2 to load. The Steam VR overlay stays on screen and the game doesn't load, even after disabling Steam Overlay settings. As for ATS, the game load fine in VR but the game won't unpause once started. Simple problems with no solution. Oh well!

Hi Michiko! I played ETS2 with Oculus Rieft S and everything was fine. Now I wanted to see the superb resolution with teh Reverb G2, but I can't get it running with ETS2. Seems to be a similar problem as you have described.

My settings are as follows:
„SteamVR“ installed
Options / General
- „Steam Overlay im Spiel aktiviert“ checked
- „Den VR-Kinomodus verwenden, während SteamVR aktiv ist“ checked
- No starting options
Updates
- App ID: 250820, Build ID: 6278796
Betas
- None
„Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR“ installed (did not work via Steam Shop. Installed via direct Link)
- „Steam Overlay im Spiel aktiviert“ checked
- „Den VR-Kinomodus verwenden, während SteamVR aktiv ist“ checked
- No starting options
Updates
- App ID 719950, Build ID 6198211
Betas
- None
ETS2 (Steam)
- „Steam Overlay im Spiel aktiviert“ checked
- „Den VR-Kinomodus verwenden, während SteamVR aktiv ist“ checked
- starting options „-openvr“
Updates
- App ID 227330, Build ID 6220133
Betas
- None

@ppringle3550: I understood, that it works on your setting. May I ask you to compare these settings with yours?

thanks, trubbert2002
