We should be allowed to choose rest length
I really like ETS2 and ATS, but one thing that I think both games need is the ability to choose how long you rest for. I watch a lot of trucker vloggers and a lot of them talk about and take 15 and 30 minute breaks during their day, but in ETS and ATS you're locked into a full rest every time you choose to take one (I believe it's 8 hours?). This leads to awkward situations where you're 2 hours away from your drop, but your driver is tired and you have only an hour or two before you really need to take a break, but taking a break will cause you to be late because you've only got 4 hours left to do the delivery. If you could take an hours break to take the edge of your tiredness, you'd be able to complete the job, then you could take a full break after you're finished.

I don't think your reasoning for this feature is a good reason to use as an argument. If you were fully rested before taking the job, then you would be nowhere close to being tired with only 2 hours left on the job. Even for rushed deliveries, the time sensitive ones, you'll always end up with more time than needed to finish the job. If you're running low on time due to sleep, then the issue is your start.

I don't really have an opinion on being able to select the amount of time skip from sleep. It was nice in 18 Wheels of Steel because it also despawned traffic. You could sleep for "1" hour, and traffic would be gone. It was great. But there's no reason for that in ETS2/ATS. I'm not against being able to choose the sleep amount, I just don't see a reason for it.

Search "sleep" in the Workshop, there are mods to reduce the amount of sleep you are required to take.
The games, by default, try to reflect real world rest requirements. Planning and scheduling your rest breaks (along with fuel stops) is a strategic element, one of the few such challenges in the game, and if it is too much for you, you can make the game easier by simply turning off Fatigue in the options menu.

I just think it's be more realistic if the ability to choose length of rest was in the game.

As that choice is largely unavailable in real life, I don't see how that would make the game more realistic :steamfacepalm:

Of course the choice is available in real life. I watch a lot of trucking vloggers on YouTube and they all choose their length of break. Often a driver will pick up a load, drive towards the drop-off point, but take his break, either 15, 20, or 30 minutes, en-route. You can't do this in the game, as every time you take a break you take a full 8 hours, which is unrealistic.

There's a difference between sleeping and taking a break. I like to believe that we're taking our break during the loading/unloading sequences. You have to remember that times flows differently in-game. You don't just take a 15 minute break.

considering the time acceleration of ets, by the time you parked, your 15 or 30 min break would be over and they are usually timed with fuel stops, as they are usually pull across to the truck stop (truck fuel stops and truck rest areas usually operate together on major routes) and stretch or eat something bought at the services..
Hewitthimself Mar 17, 2020 @ 4:13pm
and the rest stops included are the mandated working hours for trucks (or anything over certain weight) you drive x hours take a break, drive some more take a big break

Breaks are explained in the video above.
Sandhill Mar 17, 2020 @ 6:18pm
Breaks are largely irrelevant, as the don't much effect your legal responsibility to rest. As the video you posted explains, drive 9 hours, rest 11. Taking a short break gives no relief to that. "If you could take an hours break to take the edge of your tiredness, you'd be able to complete the job" is simply not true or realistic. Learn the rules both inn game and in real life.

SCS have to find a balance between realism and entertainment and arguably the existing system achieves that without becoming too annoying. The scaling of the map in the game makes the short breaks that real world truckers (are mandated to) take impractical and the drive for 11. rest for 9 is a reasonable compromise. However, the one thing I'd like to see is the ability to choose to rest for longer than 9 hours, in one hour increments, so that (especially when exploring a new area) I can choose to always drive in daylight.

+++ to be allowed to specify rest break length. Specifically I'd like to be able to take longer than the mandatory 8 hours so that I can skip any remaining nighttime, for example.
This wouldn't take away from the strategic element of the game (needing to plan for rest and fuel stops etc), but would add the ability to skip starting the day at 2am or something silly like that.

Ie, leave the mandatory rest length at 8 hours, but give the ability to specify longer.
