Difference between H and L gears?

I'm new to ETS2, and I've never driven a truck irl. I only have about 30 hours in the game and I'm playing with a G920 + Shifter.

Could anyone explain me the differences between the H and L gears, what they're for and when I should use them?

H = high , L = low

so to shift in order from low to high gears you'd shift 1L - 1H - 2L - 2H - 3L - 3H etc.

In general, you can skip some low speed gears when loaded normally, so for example you can use only the L gears untill you reach 4L, and from there on start using the H gears as well.

If you're loaded heavy, or for example going uphill, you'd skip less or no gears.
