That depends...
If you want to haul heavy cargo AND follow real life traffic rules, as far I know it's necesarry to have a 8x4 truck.
But the games rules are don't care about how many axles you have, so if you want to try that, your 6x4 750 Hp Volvo easy can haul the heavy cargos.
- I also some times take a heavy cargo with my 6x4 DAF without any problems. ;-)
however, if you put an 8x4 chassis onto every truck and give them a 750 volvo engine, 12 optimus transmission, then theyl outperform anything.
the volvo/scania 8x4 chassis is lighter than the actros 8x4 chassis.
i prefer the volvo chassis. but either way, all 8x4 chassis's are way more stable than a 4x2 or a 6x4.
i do love my ren 6x4 and i guess any chassis can pull anything up to 25ton. and over.
but i love my 8x4 chassis hybrids even more.
Again: The games traffic rules are don't care.
But some times in quarys and other dirty roads, for better grip it can make a difference to have lowered or raised the liftable axle.
But I think real life rules says you may lower the liftable axle when you haul heavy cargos.
@Chuck & briannospam: of course it all depends on weight distribution... if you don´t exceed the mandatory load-per-axle, it´s not necessary to lower the 4th axle... But you can assume that the heavy loads in the game would make that necessary i guess :)
i for my part just do it that way... i raise it for normal loads/ empty rig and lower it when picking up heavy cargo.
For the vanilla trucks that have them, the 8x4 chassis unlocks at level 16.
