Lane keeping assist mod?
Hello,

is there anything like a Lane keeping assistant? I'd even take a mod. At least for some long cruises on highways.

The problem is I don't own a steering wheel, so I have to play on the keyboard. And having to tap a key to steer every second or so causes me unbearable pain in my wrists after merely an hour of gameplay, so I can't really enjoy the game.

I don't really have any problem, when there's a lot of driving needed- like in the city, or on a minor road. But highways with wide turns are a pain in the wrist...

Thank you

Like yourself I don’t own a steering wheel as I don’t have the room for one but I have over 600 hrs using an Xbox controller. If you can afford it I would highly recommend it.

You can try driving using the mouse for steering and throttle control/braking. I've used the mouse/keyboard combo with great success with over 1.1k hours in-game.

Yea before havin a wheel i was using the mouse for steering , try that with a little bit of practice and its butter smooth

Well, I don't think mouse steering would help me. In fact it would be even worse, because I can only use mouse with my right hand, whereas I'm used to switch my hands on the keyboard time to time. I either use my left hand on WSAD, while I can rest my right hand, or use the mouse to look around, or control the truck with my right hand on arrow keys when some more precise steering is needed.
Steering mouse-only would cause me to get cramps even faster.

I have similar problem while driving in real life (in fact I'm trucker :D ) and you wouldn't believe in how many ways you can hold the wheel, when your hands start to hurt. Sadly there's only one way to use the keyboard :-(

To answer your question, no. There is no lane-keeping assist mod available. The modding API for ETS2 is not good enough to create such mods. However, people have made self-driving programs for ETS2, so I'm sure something like that could be adapted to be used only as lane-assist. I'm going to assume you're not a programmer and can't make changes to existing code to accomplish this. Sorry for not being able to assist you.

Cynical as I am about such ideas, I think that would be a great option for KB&M players :cozybethesda:

The best way to deal with pain or injuries is probably getting a wheel or stop playing.

why cynical about it? Itd be realistic.

just because so many "let's make the game flat easy" suggestions come up, and mostly I hate them, but I think that lane assist, especially for KB&M, is pretty reasonable.

But modern trucks are flat easy- If you set everything, a modern truck drives itself, especially on a highway.

LOL yes, I agree. My cynicism rearding ideas people come up with is not rooted in reluctance to embrace technology, but in how shallowly thought out most such ideas for the game actually are. I like this idea, just that simple.

Well, getting a wheel is out of the options for me ATM because of the quarantine. More so I have lost my job, so I am really not in a position to spend some 200 Euros on a new wheel.
I actually have one, but it's old and doesn't work properly with ETS.

Well, then why not make the game more realistic? (LOL) I mean- Damaged steering, which makes the truck to drift to one side, unbalanced loads, realistic cargo behavior (Have you even tried slamming brakes with the tanker half full?), malfunctioning cruise control and speed limiter (that one is a pain IRL), realistic AETR, navigation leading you somewhere you can't fit, low bridges, traffic jams and not enough parking spaces? Oh, and I really love how you enter a port and the ferry is always there :D :D :D Trust me, I've been through all of those :D

What I'm talking about is by no means an autopilot. What I suggest is that when you enter a highway, you set the truck in the lane, then engage the lane keeping assistant and it will keep the truck between the two white lines. Nothing more- no speed adjustments, collision alerts or overtaking. If anything happens (You need to change lane, exit the highway, merge a lane, or slow down because a sharp turn is coming, or there's some obstacle) you still need to take control.

Was the same for me. Cannot justify buying a steering wheel. But: You can get used to steering with mouse and never want to go back. Also: Lane keeping is technically not moddable. All solutions are more complex and need some kind of image recognition.

So, use mouse steering. You will get used to it. It's correct, steering with a/d is utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

My keyboard layout, the very basics is like this:
w = accelerate, d = decelerate - as normal
f: reset view. Very important to have it easily accessible!
SHIFT: Freelook (so while you press shift, you can mouselook around instead of steering)
c: cruise control
mousewheel: change cruise control speed

I pretty often define speed via cruise control, for convenience reasons. And same as steering with a/d, acceleration/deceleration with the keyboard is too radical.

I wish there was some inbuilt lane assist, but after all it's a sim. Still I am thinking "options are good" and playing more casually, e.g. enjoying the landscape, is a perfectly valid playstyle.

Well, my programming skills are very low, but what do AI cars use to keep themselves on the road? I think there must be some kind of lane-keeping already implemented...
