Steering mouse-only would cause me to get cramps even faster.
I have similar problem while driving in real life (in fact I'm trucker :D ) and you wouldn't believe in how many ways you can hold the wheel, when your hands start to hurt. Sadly there's only one way to use the keyboard :-(
Well, getting a wheel is out of the options for me ATM because of the quarantine. More so I have lost my job, so I am really not in a position to spend some 200 Euros on a new wheel.
I actually have one, but it's old and doesn't work properly with ETS.
Well, then why not make the game more realistic? (LOL) I mean- Damaged steering, which makes the truck to drift to one side, unbalanced loads, realistic cargo behavior (Have you even tried slamming brakes with the tanker half full?), malfunctioning cruise control and speed limiter (that one is a pain IRL), realistic AETR, navigation leading you somewhere you can't fit, low bridges, traffic jams and not enough parking spaces? Oh, and I really love how you enter a port and the ferry is always there :D :D :D Trust me, I've been through all of those :D
What I'm talking about is by no means an autopilot. What I suggest is that when you enter a highway, you set the truck in the lane, then engage the lane keeping assistant and it will keep the truck between the two white lines. Nothing more- no speed adjustments, collision alerts or overtaking. If anything happens (You need to change lane, exit the highway, merge a lane, or slow down because a sharp turn is coming, or there's some obstacle) you still need to take control.
So, use mouse steering. You will get used to it. It's correct, steering with a/d is utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
My keyboard layout, the very basics is like this:
w = accelerate, d = decelerate - as normal
f: reset view. Very important to have it easily accessible!
SHIFT: Freelook (so while you press shift, you can mouselook around instead of steering)
c: cruise control
mousewheel: change cruise control speed
I pretty often define speed via cruise control, for convenience reasons. And same as steering with a/d, acceleration/deceleration with the keyboard is too radical.
I wish there was some inbuilt lane assist, but after all it's a sim. Still I am thinking "options are good" and playing more casually, e.g. enjoying the landscape, is a perfectly valid playstyle.
Well, my programming skills are very low, but what do AI cars use to keep themselves on the road? I think there must be some kind of lane-keeping already implemented...
