When purchasing a trailer it should actually have some tooltips that lists applicable cargo types.
So I'd decide by figuring which type of cargoes i'd orefereably haul.
Flatbed with pins: This trailer can haul 80% of all normal Dry goods and is the only trailer (as of March 26 2020) some liquid goods.
Flatbed Dropside: This is not a "good" trailer but it's able to take a few unique types of cargo.
Curtainsider: This is able to take all types of Explosives along with non cooled or refrigerated dry goods.
Refrigerated: This can take all types of normal Dry goods with medical vaccine.
Log: Log trailer is able to take a few types of unique cargo but some cities have 0 job opportunities with this trailer.
