Sounds like you don't like this idea.
Most trucking companies will (in the US) have their drivers do some loading and unloading of trailers. Some advertise 98% no-touch freight.
Guess it all dependes on how energentic you are.
I work in a shop/warehouse where we sell interior/exterior paints, styrofoam insulation, adhesive for styrofoam and stuff like that... When the truck arrives with our cargo it is drivers job to open his trailer for me and let me do my job with the forklift. Everything is packed on pallets so there is nothing driver can unload. Except maybe for few smaller items here and there and extra bundles of styrofoam that couldn't be packed on a pallet
Working retail and hospitality in the UK it was always the driver who unloaded the trailer... to right next to the trailer and you took it from there. I always assumed it was a liability type thing - like the cages/pallets/barrels are off and in your possession, my job is done kind of thing? Usually either they had a ramp or we had a ramp or the loading dock was raised to trailer level and basically the driver would unload onto the ramp/into the loading dock and we took it from there. I think the only time I actually went into the trailers was at a supermarket & it was just to help the driver. I figured that was allowed because it’s a vertically integrated company - so they own the trailer, the cages, the goods on the cages, etc already, so it’s less haulage and customer but rather two departments of the same company?
As for should it be added to the game? I could see it being kinda fun in VR, but in general, not really. A lot of people have wheels, so they’d have to switch to gamepad or mouse and keyboard to push some cages, and generally unloading a trailer isn’t exactly riveting stuff.
What would be fun would be multi-part deliveries. In most all of the places I worked on a loading dock, it was the norm that not all of the trailer’s contents would be for you. The few times it was (the likes of Christmas in a supermarket) you realised just how much the trailers hold! Whilst I don’t really want a cage pushing simulator, it would be nice to have some jobs that are like ‘pick up this trailer from the depot and make 3 stops’ kind of thing. At each stop it could just be park trailer, shut off engine, press enter, start engine and go to next stop. I’d vote for that as I think it could be implemented without much development overhead and would mix things up a bit :)
I agree with you, it is the same thing where I work when we have cargo delivered with box truck. They usualy have ramp so it is not a problem for driver to unload and then I take it from there. But that is usually one or two pallets of cargo.
What I was talking was articulated truck full of pallets and styrofoam insulation.
there will never be animations of loading/unloading cargo. adding trucks require licenses. so many people asked for a feature where you get out of the truck, it will never happen. trucks will never be dirty. you can add your company logo, just search on yt.
All the other trucks I see have simply a door at the back of the trailer. They open those doors, back the trailer up to the dock, and people inside the building unload the trailer. The driver has no involvement in it, usually only leaving the cab to talk with the people for paperwork. After the driver is unloaded(or loaded), they pull out, check the load and secure it with bars or straps(depends on cargo), close and lock the doors, get in the cab, and go to their destination.
Most of the jobs we have available in ETS2 are not for the driver to unload. They are for the people at the location to unload.
For me it was the great add to the game ever, we have the option of do other things, not only driving trucks, who doesnt want to do it, will have a option to skip it for example.
For me the dream game it will be one day we can have a game where you can control a lot of things all in one game, like put together trucks, trains, tractors, cars, etc and you be able to do any job, like load and unload containers between trains, trucks and ships, work with a forklift, have various companies playing in Multiplayer with different proposes and all work together, just dreaming???? Hope some day that can be true.
