@Elit3Alf; wrong answer the OP was asking about trailer axles and not truck axles.
Not entirely true. In Europe, the number of all axles matter. It all depends on a TOTAL number of axles. If your tractor is 4x2 and you have 3 axles on yout trailer you can weight 40 tons in total. If ur tractor is 4x2 and you only have 2 axles in your trailer then your total permited weight is 36 tons. If your tractor AND trailer both have 3 axles you can go up to 44tons.
With LHV, double trailer, you can weight 60tons in total but you need a 3 axle tractor for doubles, for it to be legal. It dosen't have to be 6x2 or 6x4, it can be 6x2/4, but it have to have 3 axles total.
