Steel or wooden trailer? Differences?

Both seem to be able to get the same jobs and money so what's the difference for the steel frame trailer? Is it just purely cosmetic?

As far as I've experienced, just cosmetic. There are no weigh stations in ETS2, so I haven't been able to measure the weight difference(if any).

In the game, cosmetic. IRL probably is a difference based on the cargo type you are planning to haul.
