Controls reset to keyboard after every restart
I haven't played ETS2 in a very long time but now that I have picked it up again after several updates, every time I start my game my controls are reset to keyboard only even though I change them to keyboard + xbox 360 controller every time.
It's getting very annoying, does anybody know how to fix that?

SOLUTION: Remove 'read-only' setting in documents.

That said it would be best to try to determine why that file is not saved as it might mean that other things are not saved as well. With W10 I have seen case where Windows update changed rights in the Documents folder which prevented the game from writing there and also case where some additional security settings in the Windows Defender blocked access to Documents folder until user confirmed some popup message.

Yes it's a wireless Xbox 360 Controller connected via the Xbox 360 wireless receiver on Win 10. The driver you sent don't have anything for Windows 10 and as far as I remember Win10 already comes with the drivers installed.

I don't have any problems with using the controller on my computer at all, just that the settings in ETS2 don't save/reset.

As I already said, Win10 already comes with all microsoft drivers/updates included. And I can't download what you sent and "enhance" my controller, because it's only for Windows 7, Vista and XP. I have Windows 10.

I already read through this. All drivers and updates for my controller are already installed, I double-checked with the device manager.

Have you tried running Steam as Admin? There is an old situation with some games that won't save their settings on exit if you don't run Steam as administrator. It's easy to test at least.

Right click on Steam.exe and select "Properties" then select the "Compatibility" tab and near the bottom you will see a section under "Settings," Put a check mark in "Run this program as an administrator" then start Steam up and test it out.

Hey ComelyStar, did you get this sorted? I can't get my wireless 360 to work either. There's a issue with windows 10 with lots of games on Steam so ignore mattdillon with his SHOUTING messages.

One issue with wireless controllers is that they go to sleep when unused and they are not detected by the game while in that state. When ETS2 starts and sees that the controller is missing, it switches back to the keyboard control. We plan to improve that behavior in some future update however until then you should be able to work around it by waking up the controller before launching the game.

I know what you mean but that is not the problem. The problem is that in the controls settings it's always reset to keyboard only even though every time I start the game I set it to keyboard + controller and I always have my controller turned on before starting the game. I continue to play until I turn off the game and then when I start it up it's reset to keyboard only again.

In that case you might try to check the controls.sii file after exiting the game to see if the game was able to write the controller selection there.

Yeah it doesn't save, checking the files it only shows the lines below. How do I manually edit them for it to permanently stay as keyboard + controller?

config_lines[0]: "device keyboard `di8.keyboard`"
config_lines[1]: "device mouse `fusion.mouse`"

Did you try running Steam as Administrator?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

The controller would be saved on the third line containing device joy. Additional information about the file can be found at http://modding.scssoft.com/wiki/Documentation/Engine/Advanced_input_configuration

That said it would be best to try to determine why that file is not saved as it might mean that other things are not saved as well. No, as it causes too many issues with other games/3rd party programs.

That's the clue I needed. Windows 10 had set the ETS2 folder under documents to "read-only", once I unchecked the box and applied it to all subfolders, my settings are now staying at keyboard + controller! Thanks for getting involved, Komfr.
