6-gear gearbox. What is it good for? Yay or nay?
Hi, can anyone give me a breakdown of pros and cons of 6-gear gearbox?

I'd also like to know what chassis/engine/trailer loads works best with 6-gear. I mostly drive in southern Europe using true automatic mode for gear shifting.

I purchased the new Scania R 450hp 4x2 with 6-gear gearbox and my initial feelings are very positive, yet I couldn't test this setup in all driving conditions, so an advice from experienced trucker would be welcome.
My first impressions are like - gears are long and engine retains good dynamics when compared to 12-gear gearbox where atuomatic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is waaay to "eco" which results is really slow speed upslope.
So also I'm really curious how 6-gear automatic works in the mountian areas? I'd not want to be surprised when it comes to that tricky roads in the Alps ;)

Please use a search box next time. This is 2012 game.

@GLOW>>>No need to be like that, the OP was asking a valid question, and maybe his search was nowhere to be found, also it's how you type it in the search bar which is very limited.
And the game release date has nothing to do with it.

May I recommend that you go on the tube link below, there are more upto date reviews on the 6speed gearbox.

I use a g29 wheel and pedals with a Logitech Driving Force 6 speed with reverse Shifter, 6 speed for me is ok but trying to use it for 12 speed or 16 does confuse my brain a bit and needs a macro key to change up or down, but as its built for 6 speed range settings I leave it at that, so for me it's a YAY, never had a problem with it, and also I have modded it inside to give me a more realistic feel to it.

So try out the link and I guess there will be some others on here who will give you the low down on either YAY or NAY, but for me it's a defo YAY ALL DAY LONG.

Just for fun have a look at this set up.

In real life alliston gearbox is fully automatic, no manual of this type. It is designed for standard loads, up to 23t, on long routes. It has low ratio on top gear, so it should be fuel efficient at cruise speed.
Disadvantage of this type is low numbers of gear. In high mountains with heavier cargoes it will keep higher revs, as there are lower number of gears - might be harder to keep proper torque and fuel economy will be lower. Also, you might have lower speed uphill. In general you need to try answer your question yourself;)

In ATS I use Allison transmissions a lot (especially the 10 speed and the 7 speed even for heavy loads). In ETS2 we only have one 6 speed transmission. But it's better than nothing... There is no problem using it instead of a regular 12 speed. I have quite a few trucks equipped with it (up to 450/460 HP). Great for standard loads (as Xyzan mentioned). Driving it feels a bit like driving a car with automatic transission. I really recommend it. Just give it a try! If you don't like it, the next truck repair isn't that far away... :steamhappy:

Thanks for the comments, I agree with you this gearbox really rocks and yeah it feels like driving a car with dsg :) Also driving in the mountains isnt that bad too, it is actually quite good for an automatic gearbox. Normally when on a mountian road with 12 gear box I switch to manual shifting so I can keep the most effective gear on with good speed - near the red line rather than allowing the mechanism to escape to a slower and higher gear.
I also noticed that trucks with smaller engine benefit for 6 gear Allison gearbox more than from 12-gearboxes, because shifting is really fluid. I know Allison gearboxes are since some time but I never used thinking they are really inferior, and I was wrong. Will definitely keep using them :)

I am glad you like it! If you haven't done it yet, you may define the keys for shift up/down hint("up" is the more interesting one). Not only useful for the Allison but for the other gearboxes, too. Happy Trucking! :longhaul:

There is something like upshift/downshift automatic gearbox button to be defined. You can force change gears without changing to sequential (which can also be done with button). It helps when going uphill with automated gearbox (especially 12), because you can drop 2 gears instead of one, and keep better momentum, and stay on higher rpms. This will allow you to get uphill faster.
