Euro Truck Simulator 2
Extremely annoying sound
Hi there,
I trust you are doing splendidly and enjoying the season.

I have played the game for about 24 hours in total, and I can say there is a very annoying sound within the cabin: whenever the "W" key (throttle) is pressed, i.e. accelerating, a blank noise (like the one from TV when missing signal, or like a tinnitus) is overlaied on the actual truck's engine sound. This noise or ringing in the ears can be heard in all camera view points (1-9).
When I stop pressing the "W" key OR whenever the gear is changed (automatically) the noise disappear (in the second case, for a very short time, like 1.5 seconds; not pressing W, i.e. not accelerating by engine means, kills the noise until I press the button again . I suspect this is a gear/engine noise, since it is heard whenever I accelerate.
Turning the "Sound effects" off, i.e uncheck the Sound effects box or reduce to 0 the Sound effect volume, kills the noise, but also the engine sound and everything else.

This noise became unbearable, but turning the Sound effects off also cripples game experience.
This noise is by default there (clean install of the game via Steam). Mods like "Sound fix"/"Sound improvement" etc. had 0 effect.

Have a nice day and please do take care!
Regards,

You are not driving a mod truck, right? Because I see the Arocs in your list.

No, I don't. The truck is the default one.

Still, no result. Same sound even with 0.0 - mind blowing
It's possible then, that you are actually driving the other mercedes.

In your "def/vehicle/truck" folder in your ETS2 docs folder, make a new one called "mercedes.actros"
Then inside that folder, mak a new one called "sound".
Leave the mercedes.actros2014 as it is.

from your extracted def.scs folder, copy the two files from:
def/vehicle/truck/mercedes.actros/sound
to the same folder you just made in your mod folder.

Navigate to your def folder in your mod folder. In:
def/vehicle/truck/mercedes.actros/sound
edit the two files the same way you edited the 4 sound files for the Actros 2014 in my previous post.
Save them both.

See how that goes.

I have just made a test and set the volume of my reverse warning sound to 0.0 in the SII file and I can tell you that it worked – I don't hear the sound anymore.

Maybe you could try again on a new profile without mods, just in case that one of your mods interferes with or changed the sound settings.
I've added the mercedes.actros/sound/*.sii files within the def/vehicle/truck structure from the mod folder. The sound persists. I've reinstalled the game and used only this def mod - no result. Any tests should be done precisely on the *.sii files related to the turbo whistle, in order to have statistical significance.
Another thought – maybe the turbo is silent now but there is still another sound file that sounds similar to the turbo. If you click through the other files in the Actros sound folder and give them a quick listen you can at least be sure that they are not the cause of your problem.

There is no mistake, it is exactly the turbo whistling sound.
What if I extract base.scs and remove turbo_*.ogg files - how do I recompress the extracted files back to a base.scs ?

I don't think that works. But you could overwrite them with something different, just call the new file "turbo_*.ogg" and put it into the mod at the right place. (I wonder what happens if you use a file that isn't a sound - maybe the game will just ignore it and play no sound at all.)

I'm sorry it didn't work yet.

One thing I have noticed is that your SII files are different from the default version. You apparently removed (from line 10)

retarder: .r

and (from line 80)

# Retarder sound_data: .r { name: "/sound/truck/mercedes/1845/int/mercedes_retarder_1_int.ogg" looped: true volume: 0.5 }

But I am not sure if that's making a difference for your issue.

I don't know what happened when I used this the first time and it didn't work (perhaps it was conflicted by some "Sound fix"/"Sound improvement" mods or perhaps it didn't have top priority), BUT it actually won the battle with the turbo whistling sound.

The high pitched turbo whisling ringing in the ears sound is finally gone.
Many thanks to everyone who posted in this thread, especially to pieperjohanns and room217au. I do very much appreciate your help.

Job well done Cromi, and thank you very much for this mod.

Therefore, the problem is solved now.

Have a nice day and please do take care!

Strange. I just subscribed to that mod and it is exactly what was suggested you do on your own mod.
From Cromi's suggestion:
def/vehicle/truck/mercedes.actros2014/sound/interior_16.sii
sound_data: .t { name: "/sound/truck/mercedes/4148/int/turbo_int.ogg" looped: true volume: 0.0 }

Clearly you were doing something wrong. But, like others above, I'm glad you sorted it out.
Cheers.
