Anyone uses a 6 speed gearbox? Why?
I wonder,
Does anyone uses a 6 speed gearbox (on any truck)?
If so:
1. Do you use manual or automatic gearbox?
2. Why did you pick a 6 speed gearbox?

Not here to bash the 6 speed gearbox, just wonder why to choose it?

My thought is that IF you prefer a manual gearbox, than it's far easier to shift less gears.

Originally those 6gear alliston gearboxes are ONLY automatic. They are fully automatic, not like 12 gears, which are automated - difference is that 6 is designed as automatic gearbox, and 12 gear are kind of standard gearbox, but added additional stuff to automaticly change gears. So, in real life, you won't find 6 gear manual in big trucks. (regardless, that you won't find manual in some trucks at all. For example Mercedes do not offer manual gearbox in MP4, as far as I know)
Now, what is the difference? The availability of torque. With more gears, you can have best torque/power all the time, as you are capable to keep engine on best revs all the time. So, 6 gear gearbox will be good, when not planning to carry heavy stuff, on flat surfaces. It would be more efficent (last gear ratio is much smaller, so car uses less fuel while cruising) then. On the other hand, if you are planning to hauling 60t over the mountains, it would be better to have even 16, or 18 gearboxes.
I'm personally using 12 automatic (I have h-shifter, but I went into automatic as a more convenient way), as it fits my needs ;) Tried 6 speed, and I though it changes gears quicker, but I'm not sure about it). However, I like the sound of changing gears, so, the more the better ;)

Thanks your your detailed reply,
Dunno about semi-trailer, but I'm pretty sure that International Workstar also offers a manual 6 gear gearbox:

This is US brand - I do not know much about them. 6 speed manual gearboxes are offered in smaller trucks in europe. They are much more limited to lower weight, which makes that gearbox usable.
When I was driving manual 12, I used 7 gears anyway ;) usually it was 4-6-(switch to high gears) 8-9-10-11-12. And that was quite enough, except mountains, where splitting gears is very handy and helps to maintain speed uphill.

I use 6 speed gearbox on all my trucks. Manual sequential becaose it was too much shifting for me with sequentional shifter on my wheel and its shifting is too loud. If I had realistic shifter and could skip gears i would definately drive with 12+ gears

I always use 12 gears. Why would you use 6.

I tried both 6 and 12 and both automatic and manual.
But most of the time I stick to 12 automatic because it's more relaxing so i don't have to focus on the gears.

But whenever i want to use a manual transmission, i found that 6 is easier to work with (with G29 gear box) because it's very close to when i drive a car in real life and i don't have to worry to split the gears. But It is very poor when climbing hills.

Using 12 in manual is also fun and challenging to drive if you own a proper wheel and paddle set like G29 or G27. Because you need to focus on the rev and the split/range.

But i prefer 12 automatic.

everything from 3 to 124. (at the moment).
6 gear manual is great fun with the right amount of power/torque.
thats just between me & the chopshop though.

*uses gearbox aptly named "XXX 43Gr Star Fighter 1" the most.*
"124Gr Warp Reactor 1?"
"nah, not today."
(auto ofc)

mp?
alison 5 manual sometimes.
mostly an auto 12 or so.

O.O

Tried 6 gears manual yesterday, was fun. but when shifting the gears down it doesn't brake as hard as I thought it should, so I also need to use retarder.

I don't think I would get used to a 6 speed gearbox. I got 8 gears in my truck (real life in driving lessons) and 12 in game.

P.S don't put a car in the 3rd gear when starting to drive. I did that once because two days earlier I had been to a driving lesson in my truck, and when I start driving it I always start in the 3rd gear, so the car stalled all the time, doh! :steamfacepalm:

Happy :longhaul:in'

Nahhh.... they aren't precise enough to effectively get heavy cargo over highly variable terrain. Can never find the right gear in a big rig with only 6 gears IMO

i'd use it if i had an h shifter without a sequential option

I'm using the 6 speed all the time, with the automatic.

Didn't find more gears to be useful, It's just skipping them anyway.

Managed to successfully deliver the 62t locomotive with a 400hp engine with the 6 speed gearbox, so even heavy weight is not bad. With the 12 and 18 gears, the truck spends more time on the clutch then actually pulling, that's my feeling.
i´m sometimes using a 6 speed with sequential shifting and it works okay. In very rare occasions "half gears" would be helpful, but most of the time i don´t shift more than 6 or 7 gears anyway, so i can as well use the 6-speed gearbox. As i said, it works well. I´m not that much in a hurry, so i don´t care if one or 2 gears are a bit longer...

But i also like the 12-speed boxes, especially for the multiple reverse gears... In ATS i exclusively use the 7 speeds, turned out to work perfectly for me :)

if there were 8-speeds in ETS2, i´d use those for sure ;)

I currently run the 730 Scania. Using an 8 speed shifter but for lighter loads its a dream compared to the 12-shifter. I highly doubt heavy loads will be an issue with this engine :)

I put a 6 speed transmission in my DAF that I use for exploring the remaining bits and pieces of the map. You can get up to speed much faster with it, which is useful when you are constantly stopping and starting to go over some ramp or gas station you've previously missed.
